Just got the X Monday. Used it yesterday with GPS while plugged into car charger. Battery went down and phone turned off. I'm certain it was plugged in and charging. IS THIS NORMAL?

It shouldnt be discharging when the charger is connected. Did you purchase a new charger or are you using your old one? Also, do you have a case on the X?
If you bought a cheap 3rd party charger or are using one from your last phone, i suggest you get a new charger. I won't even ask if the charger was fully seated in the adapter on both ends.

Brand new phone. Brand new charger from Verizon. No case. Motorola window mount.

And in terms of proper connections, when the phone turned off, it did charge. That, and the fact that I physically checked and rechecked the connections, tells me that I was charging at full capability.
It could be the charger, but I am more inclined to think it is the phone. It is pretty quirky. Simple processes delay, even when not much else is going on. My first smart phone, other than playing with a Droid Devour for a month. I understand the processor, etc on the X should be as fast as they come. So any delays just don't seem right to me.

I'm testing that, by putting my blue tooth and gps on while the home charger is plugged in. If the battery still goes down, it's the phone. If it charges, it's the car charger. I'll let you know what I get.

It may not be the phone, it may be the battery. Not all batteries are created equal. I might add, if you do choose to buy a new battery, go a little bit more and purchase the extended battery, it's worth the money. As for window mounts, I had one and returned it. My phone never could connect successfully with it.

I might have a clue for you.
Had a similar problem a week or so back. Got to work, plugged it in, and it still discharged. I tried plugging into several different USB ports, then decided my cable was bad.
Then on a hunch I just cycled the power and it started charging again. It's only done that once, FWIW.
I'm thinking that may be what happened to you?

I'm not thinking that's what happened, cause I could see the charging symbol on the display... and watch the battery level go down.

Are you using a usb charger or a standard hard wire charger? I have ran into issues with a number of usb chargers, it would show charging but the voltage wasn't high enough to charge device while using a intensive use like gps or video playback.

Im sorry, I wasnt clear... Does the charger have the power wire that you plug to phone hard wired to charger or is the charger a usb adapter that plugs in lighter socket and then you use the usb computer cable to plug into the charger.... There is a diffrence on how these chargers handle the power to device. The hardwired version are more reliable for charging.. Which one fo you have?

Wildman, it is the hard wired one. It does have a usb slot available, but I was only using the hard wired connection.

Well, it's confirmed. I plugged it into the home charger and was still able to make the battery go down by using GPS and the occasional web browsing.

JC i've had the same kind of problem. I use my car mount and charger (all from Verizon) every day, and I notice that the battery really never charges after a long drive. The battery says it's charging, but still comes out the same level or even lower. The only time it actually charges in the car is when I have it in "sleep" mode. But if I'm using the bluetooth, GPS, music apps then it doesn't seem to charge. I upgraded to 2.2 yesterday, this may have fixed the problem but I'll report back in another couple days...

One thing people forget to do or change is to reduce the times your phone connects to get your messages. That will drain your phone extremely fast especially when you have it checking and download your mail every 15/30/60/120 minutes. Reduce it to once a day.
I ran a fully charged phone down to 20% capacity in about two hours. and I had EVERYTHING TURNED ON.

good idea if you just want to extend battery during the day, but the issue is the battery actually discharging while connected to the charger.
Off the original topic here, but who only checks their messages once a day?
I would call VZW about the issue because that shouldnt happen. I can run bluetooth, pandora, and GPS on my car ride to work starting at 10% battery and be up to 40% by the end of my hour ride.

Download one of the free battery apps that show you your battery voltage. Watch it while it's on the charger and see if it's actually increasing. Just a quick recall off the top of my head, my battery showed 60% charge @ 3.891v. Take a look at the phone while it says 100%, it should be over 4.0v. If you are seeing lower numbers there is a good chance you battery is not charging to capacity and you will want to get the battery exchanged asap.
Also remember, using USB to power your device will not charge as quickly as your home charger plugged into a wall. The same can be said about a car charger. With that said, if those battery app numbers don't match up I'd get your battery swapped.
