Since the jelly bean update, my Bionic has gradually been getting worse about freezing up during opening apps, working in apps, and just general use. What can be done for this ? Its got to the point where its difficult to use.

A system cache clear may help:
Power down phone
Hold volume up/down & power simultaneously until you see the Boot Mode Selection Menu
Use volume down to navigate to 'Recovery', use volume up to select
Should see screen with triangle and exclamation point next to an Android
Press volume up/down simultaneously to go into system recovery
Use volume rocker to navigate to 'wipe cache' and use power button to select
Once finished, use volume rocker to navigate to 'reboot system now' and use power button to select

There is a step in-between. The OP also could run their phone in safe mode to see if there may be an app that isn't playing nice with JB. If a factory reset is required, I'd suggest loading apps one or two at a time rather than all at once, again to rule out an app that isn't compatible with JB.
