I'm getting this almost everytime I take a pic and the flash goes off. The screen will go black right after the flash goes off and I have to pull the battery to get the phone to do anything. Thoughts?

Mine does this as well. Verizon's only solution, their usual go-to solution, is to restore to factory settings. I've done this twice, and now my phone is doing it yet again. They need to collaborate with Samsung and find a REAL solution, perhaps a sofware update. My camera is not working again, it's frustrating. It just starts to take a photo then the screen turns black and have to do a soft reset on my phone to get it to work. I have installed NO new apps (or updates) between when it work and when it stopped working. It is crazy.

I have had almost 6 replacements and every single phone that i have does this. please let us know what we can do. this cannot be normal and as much as i use my camera - i shouldn't have to deal with taking the battery out almost every time. thanks so much!

I am also and have been experiencing the same thing. My Charge has shut down easily 20 times due to using the flash. This is an obvious problem with the camera/phone. What will Verizon do to make this right so I don't have to pull the battery (the only fix...it's like the flash shorts out the entire phone). I actually took flash less pics of an event (and they didn't come out) for my 8 year old son because I didn't want to use the flash and shut down the phone.
Frustrated,
Mark (Strom)

I am not optimistic that Verizon will do anything to help except keep coming up with excuses why the phone is not working correctly. In mid-October I was told by Verizon that the reason my phone was locking up when I took flash pictures was because of the system software. An in-store Verizon rep. told me they were expecting a system update near the end of October...that update did not arrive until early December. Guess what? My phone still locks up when I take a flash picture.
Now I am reading in this Community that Verizon is claiming that it is the battery and goes so far as to insult it's customers by saying that if the battery was not charged fully for 6 or more hours when the phone was first purchased, that the battery will never achieve a full charge. So it must be the incompetent user or a defective battery?? I have read here that the claim has been made that if the battery is not charged completely, there is not enough battery power for a flash picture. I'm sorry...that is not a battery problem, that is a phone/flash hardware design problem. It is a hardware problem because apparently Samsung built a flash for the camera function that requires so much battery power that customers apparently can only take flash pictures when the battery is fully charged. That is riduculous to think that Verizon Samsung Droid customers have to limit their flash photograpy to when the battery is fully charged and that to expect the flash to work at lower battery power is asking too much of the phone.
I am sure that there are many Verizon Samsung Droid users out there who love their phones because they simply do not use the phone's camera or don't take flash pictures. Verizon needs to step up to the plate and simply admit that the Samsung Droid Charge has a design flaw with the camera flash function and give it's customers the opportunity to switch to a different phone that performs up to the customers expectations. That is not asking too much and it would show that a company the size of Verizon gives more than lip service to it's customers. After all, we customers are paying the bills.

The battery excuse is nonsense. I stumbled on this problem because an app that is supposed to use my LED as a flashlight just causes the phone to re-boot while the phone is fully charged and plugged in! Also, until the update, I never had a problem with either camera flash or using my LED with a flashlight app, regardless of how charged up it is. There's a bug in their Gingerbread, and they'd rather blame the users.
So, I guess this answers another question I had too ... whether it's worth installing a 3rd party Gingerbread. I was happy with my 3rd party Froyo, but the Verizon push to update to their Gingerbread was so insistent I finally gave in. ... sigh.

With GB, I've not yet experienced the problem again, but I have noticed that the flash is set to a lower use level (isn't flashing in the same light levels as past), and seems to be dimmer.

WAWatson,
That is great it's working. I remember we both tried to figure out the cause. In your case it may have been the OS.
Because the camera worked great is my Charge with FROYO 2.2.1 it could have been a bad loading of FROYO in your phone, that is, unless you now have BOTH a different Charge phone and GB 2.3.6
Best regards,

JerryF,
Same Phone and the OTa update. Can't be sure it's gone, and will be in the weak signal area again tonight taking pictures, so I'll post agsin if it freezes. I suspect the new Camera Software that came with GB has somehting to do with it, as the flash isn't going off as often, and it dosn't seem as bright.

JerryF,
My post went twice, I edited the second with the message. It might be because of my sticky (auto double clicking) mouse button.
I just shoot 7 with flash on ON, and 6 with the flash on AIUTO, the Auto shoots did not flash. Battery was just freshly 100% charged. Phone worked with out freezing, so the camera update in GB seems to be helping.

WAWatson,
Will,
I am happy to tell you your camera is working perfectly...no problems.
Like any other camera when the flash is set to OFF the flash will never flash.
When it is set to ON the flash will flash every time you take a photo.
And, when it is set to AUTO FLASh it will flash ONLY when the camera (not you) determines that there is NOT enough light for a good picture and then it will flash. Otherwise when there is enough light for a decent picture the camera will NOT flash.
Your camera is working perfectly just like any other camera whether it's in a phone or it's only a camera (not in a phone).
I am glad that GB 2.3.6 fixed it for you.

Yea, JerryF, I know how the camera/flash Auton/On/Off works. When taking the same pictures before the flash in auto would flash, now it's not that was the only point I was making.
Yep, it's good to have the camera working better and not freezing the phone.
Thanks,
Will

We have had this phone for 3 months now and it radomly locks up like some have described the only way to get it to turn on is pull the battery. I tried to read the 18 pages and it looks like there is some conjecture about turn off flash, turn off picture review, sacerfice some chickens, and/ or yell out loud all seem to have some results and not with others. What is the best solution just not take picutes or not use the flash?
Thank you VZW for asking me if my phone was charged when I called into the toll free number. I guess Im that dumb.

I've had my Charge for right around two months now, and this issue has happened both before and after the Gingerbread update.
Latest was last week, while I was out as a jobsite and needing to document some field conditions. VERY inconveinent. Phone would not turn back on without pulling the battery, which in and of itself, was an interesting experience (since the conver apprently isn't made to slide off which might otherwise be considered normal).

Well, GB did not fix the problem, so I'm now convinced it's a hardware issue. Either a battery that can't support the amp draw of the phone doing the verizion battery sucking power drain while searching for a stronger signal while also supplying the power to operate the flash, or a phone that demands more power than the batteries are designed to provide.
Again in my shop, where phone signal is weak to non-existent I can take pictures and crash the phone with any battery level. the only way to keep it from crashing is to put the phone into AirPlane mode so it stops the verizion battery sucking while searching for a signal.
So the problem is real, and does exist outside of the software.
Merry Christmas,
Will

I am having the same issue. It thought it was a battery issue but I have had it happen right after chaging the phone as well. When it locks I have to take the battery out and put it back in to turn the power back on. Once turned on the battery lift still shows full. Are there any solutions?
