Can I activate a Droid X onto my account even if I don't purchase it?

Hi,

I currently have a Droid, I want the Droid X. I am not eligible for an upgrade, but my friend is. If he purchases the phone, can I use the phone he purchases and activiate my phone line with it? The deal is, he will purchase the X, I will give him my Droid.

So, if he purchases the X, can he give it to me, I activate it, then I give him my Droid and he can activiate the Droid on his line?

You should be able to go online and be able to switch your number to the device as long and the device is clear in the Verizon system...

Ok, how would I go about transfering my Droid to his account then? Also, would I be able to clean my droid free of my personal info, emails, contacts, facebook, etc?

It should not be an issue at all. You're simply selling your device, which people do all the time. Simply - activate the Droid X onto your account, and the old Droid should become inactive. Then activate it on his account. At least, that's how it should work.

With Google Sync, once you enter your Gmail account information into the phone, all of your contacts and gmail settings will come over to the Droid X.

For your old phone, under Settings > Privacy, there is Factory data reset that you can use to wipe your phone of personal information.

Sure it can be done.  But in a nutshell that means that his line will have a contract on it for a phone that he no longer has in his possession.  What happens if he needs or wants to do an upgrade on his line?  Are you going to let him have your upgrade once it becomes available?  Business deals between friends can get ugly.  You might do better buying your phone off of eBay.
