Certified Like New?

I am about 23 days into owning a Droid X.  I absolutely love the phone but am about to throw it and Verizon out the window.  Here's where I'm at, if anyone knows how to help it would be much appreciated.  (Number 1 below is more of me "venting" than an item that needs help)

1.  I was travelling in San Diego over the holidays when my old phone died (it had a good long life).  I pulled into a "Verizon" store and purchased the Droid X.  Amazing.  During my purchase the employees of this 4G Wireless Store that was dressed as a Verizon store looked up my account and noticed that I was from Phoenix, AZ.  I also discussed the fact that I was moving to Denver in a couple of days.  Although they mentioned the return/exchange policies and that if I had any problems to bring it back to a Verizon store, they failed to mention that I could only bring it back to a 4G Wireless which ONLY operates in California.  This would have been nice info to have during the purchase as I'm now in Denver with a less than 30 day old phone and stuck in Verizon's "Certified Like New" hell.  Note to self; NEVER PURCHASE ANYTHING FROM AN "AUTHORIZED VENDOR", they are only authorized to scr*w you.

2.  Original "New" Phone (12/26/10 - 1/12/10, RIP) - Everything was wonderful, upgraded from a beat up Voyager to the Droid X and was blown away.  A couple of weeks in, I noticed that the volume of the earpiece was way to low and I couldn't control the volume making the phone useless except on speaker.  Every other function of the phone worked perfectly.  I went to my new local Verizon store in Denver, handed the phone to the rep and within 5 minutes he said "that's funny" and had a NEW replacement on the counter.  While trying to scan it in he asked where I had bought it and the nightmare begins (See #1).  That's when I was informed that I could only have a "Certified Like New" replacement or return it to San Diego (Denver to San Diego = far).  I really don't care if my phone is new or "certified"; I just want it to work.  Order replacement phone #1.  I still have the original which is the only working phone of the 3 I'm looking at, so if there's a fix for the earpiece speaker I'll send these two other{word filter avoidance} phones back.

3.  "Certified Like New" replacement #1, Phone #2 (1/18/11 - 1/18/11, RIP) - I wait anxiously by the door until my new replacement phone arrives.  I tear open the packaging like a kid on Christmas, swap the battery and SD card, hit the power and nothing.  It eventually turns on but I can't do anything.  Hop in the truck and off to Verizon to get help activating.  Immediately the rep has problems activating the phone.  Eventually gets it and I spend the next two hours watching it power on and off randomly, reconfigure the SD card, freeze up, and generally not work at all.  Back to Verizon.  The rep didn't seem suprised to see me.  Has anyone had problems with the powering on and off at random?  Could this be apps?  I have the same apps that I had on phone #1 which had no problems.

4.  "Certified Like New" replacement #2, Phone #3 (1/19/11 - 1/20/11) - See above for the anxiously waiting part.  Phone arrives, power up and nothing.  Back to Verizon for activation.  This one seems good, activates quickly, etc.  Still leary, I give this one some time before I download any apps.  It powers off once in the first couple of hours but I stay optimistic and reload a few apps (Yelp, Google Maps, Facebook, etc.).  About six hours into it being powered up, it starts powering on and off randomly, freezes, same stuff as above.  I'll be back at Verizon in the morning; 4 times in 4 days ordering my 4th phone in 4 weeks.  Same question as above; could this be apps?  Same apps as phone #1 that had no problems.

I'm not sure if it is apps or {word filter avoidance} phones (I believe the latter as I have the same apps as installed on the original phone which worked fine in that regard).  I would be happy to list the apps if I could turn my phone on right now.  I think it's the following: Yelp, Google Maps, Advanced App Killer (recommended by 4G Wireless?), a few games and ringtones.

This is always a mistack in my opinion because the 30 day warrenty is cover by the 3rd party vender and it seems to always lead to heardaches..  The discounted devices isnt worth the issues that usually comes from dealing with a defective device.

Which version of the OS are you running on the replacement device, the speaker issue was a 2.1 version issue and was resolved in the 2.2 update, check Settinds >> About Phone >> Android Version, it should read 2.2.1 if you have the latest update, if not you need to try the update (At top of same menu there is a "System Update" area, click it and see if it prompts for te update.

Is there a reason why you having the store activate the device, did you try dialiing *228 and option #1 to activate (Making sure old device is also off), every device I recieved all I had to do was turn off old device and then dial *228 and #1 and follow activation steps and was up and using device lest than a couple minutes.... Are you getting any error when you try to activate from the phone?

This is a hard one to identify, incompatible software can cause this issue but you have said you have had reboot with no software installed,  My device has been a very reliable device and it seems strange that you are running into so many issues.

Thanks for the reply, the replacement phone is v. 2.2.1 and has no earpiece problems, just the powering on and off issues.  I'll check the original phone OS because if it's just an upgrade need, hooray.  As far as the purchase location, I only wish that this was a discounted phone because I'd feel better.  I used an upgrade but the phone was still listed at $500.  I walked into a 4G Wireless store that was decked wall to wall with Verizon, the only item that stated 4G Wireless was one of the 10 sheets of paper they handed me after the purchase.  I had no idea that I wasn't dealing with an actual Verizon store.

Wildman-

Thanks again for the response.  I checked out the original phone (earpiece problem) and it is v. 2.2.1, so no dice there.  But in response to why I had Verizon activate each phone; when I tried to dial any number, including for activation, neither phone would connect.  It showed 3x bars with a blue triangle but wouldn't connect to anything.  Do these phones need to be re-set or something?  Two replacement phones in two days with the exact same problem seems strange.

2.2.1 is the most recent update so you are good there....  PLEEESE tell me I am misunderstanding you, you renewed your contract and the device did not cost you 500.00 because verzion sells the device for 199.99 on contract and as for the store, I have made that mistake before so I now have a habit of checking address of location with Verizons site to make sure I have a certified Verizon store because I do know how much headache that this can cause.

Yes, I think the same as Verizon's direct; $549.99 (list), -$250.00 (upgrade rebate), -$100 (mail in rebate) = $199.99.  I'd be raising h*ll at the store right now if I'd paid the list; not looking for easier solutions on-line.  I'm worried about getting a working device as I've got 20 months for another upgrade.

Do you know anything about running in safe mode?  I saw it on another post.  Maybe a way to eliminate questionable apps being the problem?

Android does not have a safe mode, there is a recovery mode but that is used to restore device in a none boot situation.

OK maybe we are thinking of something different, how are you accessing Safe Mode? I thought that was a windows option only, I have yet to see instructions to access safe mode on Android, only recovery mode.

Update: I stand corrected, after a quick search found the instuctions..  Never even knew that existed but I guess I never needed to use it... :smileywink: , shows you never to old to learn..:smileyvery-happy:

Boot your Verizon Motorola Droid X in Safe Mode. This will allow you to access the device with the original software and settings if something is preventing the device from starting.

1. Power the Droid X off.

2. Press and hold the Menu button on the lower-left side of the screen.

3. Keep holding the Menu button while the device starts until you see the Home screen load. It should say Safe Mode in the bottom-left corner of the screen.

To take the Droid X out of Safe Mode, simply power the device off, then back on.

I get into Safe Mode on my Droid x as follows:

- Power off the phone.

- Press & HOLD the Menu button

- While holding the Menu button, press the Power up button - continue to hold the Menu button for the duration of the power up.

Results in SAFE MODE - says so in the lower left corner of the screen.

Power OFF/ON to get out of Safe Mode.

Thanks for update, I found a post with instructions covering the Safe mode option online for Droid X that matched your instructions.
