I am pretty sure this is a real bug. I have found other people with the same problem online but no resolutions.
I got my Droid yesterday - wnet through set up and all was perfect with gmail and FB access. Since I was using a fake email for FB, I decided to change the emaill address to my real one because of the the great intergration with the Droid/gmail/FB combo.
Now, I can log in fine to FB on the PC, using the web browser on the droid and using something like FB lite on the droid, but NOT with the native bundled application on the droid.
Error Message: Login! An error has occured during the sign in. Please try again later.
If I purposely use a bad password, I get a wrong username/password error, so I know it is not my username/password, plus I can log in fine via the Droid web.
So far this is what I have done for troubleshooting:
Deleted all broswer cookies/passwords/form data.
Reformatted SD card.
Reset factory settings on phone.
Set the whole phone up again.
I have NOT unistalled/reinstalled the app since I cannot find this particuliar app in the marketplace. There are other FB apps, but I cannot find this specific VerizonDroid app there.

I am having the same issue. I logged out of the Facebook App. When I attempted to log back in I am getting the same message. I can log into Facebook through the browswer no problem. I have now lost all of my syncing.
Does anyone know if this is a bug or if maybe the system is just currently down?

goto settings-->manage applications-->menu-->filter-->all
then click on the facebook application to go to it's settings page
then click "clear data"
I don't have the issue so I can't tell you whether it works, but it may clear it up for you

I read this on a another forum. Looks like this is a big issue.
"Join the club. People are changing their FB account accesses to gmail accounts to get the FB notify and inbox messeges on their phone. The problem is, once you make that change you can no longer login via Facebook for Android and use the sync options. You can log in with the new gmail account everywhere else...including the phones browser. FB ... Read Morefor andriod is retaining some info somewhere (probably server side...given that people have reset there phones and still had no lucj) that is not letting you get back in using the new gmail account. This actually violates Facebooks terms and conditions for developers - When you go to your Facebook Settings- Applications- Authorized (on FB not the phone) and remove an application from your account ("Facebook for Android" in this case) the developer is required to remove all information related to you from his database. There is some bug in the cleanup process, otherwise you would just be able to remove the app from your FB settings and come in with a clean start.....you can't. Lets us know if yours starts working."

Yeah, this definately seems to be a large problem. This really sucks because I was loving the contacts syncing.
I didn't change my FB to my new gmail account and I am still experiencing this problem. Are we all just assuming this is a problem with the App and Facebook and until it is resolved we wont be able to do any syncing (which happens to be a HUGE part of the Droid experience).
Come on Verizon, get ontop of this please.

I'd keep posting outrage everywhere - they more vocal we are, the better the chance o getting noticed. I am posting this to other places to promote the problem, but also to attract the attention of development guru's who might have us try something else for a solution. I bought the darn phone for the "google/facebook intergration - this was a huge selling point.

My and my husband's Droids are doing the exact same thing. I had to exchange my phone because something was broken on the first one I was sent. I could log in fine with the first one and it synched everything up. I did change my email on the account to my new Gmail account, so that may have coincided with that, but I'm not sure since I the first one broke before I did that (and I couldn't attempt to log in with that username on that particular phone).
We brought them both to a Verizon store here and the guy was very nice. He submitted a report on both the phones and even called a friend to have him try to log in (it gave him the same message, so he submitted a report on his friend's phone too). The guy told us that he was pretty sure that Verizon would fix the problem soon since EVERYONE uses Facebook and they're going to get a lot of calls. In the meantime, though it won't synch your info, you can still log in through the browser, so that's what I've been doing.

Look at the top of the Home screen. You will see a triangle with and explanation point on the left of the status bar. long press on it and drag the notification screen down. It should say can't log into Gmail. Tap on that and you will be able to change the password on the Droid for you Gmail account.

My gmail account is fine and working perfectly on the droid. The facebook app is the problem. I explained this is my description above.
There is no yellow icon on the home screen. This is now a known issue with with hundreds of people having issues. I hear they are working on it, but there is no estimated time for resolution.

There is a thread on Facebook regarding the new Android Facebook App. In there, dated 11/11, they recognize that there are log in problems and are trying to fix it. They say it does not pertain to everyone.
It seems that if you recently joined Facebook or changed your password, the Android Facebook App server is not accepting your account at this time.
I guess we will just have to wait until this is corrected. Hopefully it will be soon.

The concerns me because there should not be a seperate server out there collecting my FB info. I should be connecting directly to the FB login server and that's that. Who owns this "Android Facebook" server? I want to know the details on this. Technically, according to FB terms of service for developers, any time someone chooses to stop using an application, the thrid party has to delete all of their associated information. What had google done with this app? Where are they storing my username and password that Facebook doesn't even have permission to change it?

I was able to log in last night and as of this morning I am still logged in. Anyone else still not able to log in?
Suggestion - for those of us that use a Task Killer, do not kill the Facebook app for a while. I have a feeling this problem may come up again and if you log off or kill the app, you may end up experiencing this same problem.

I read of the "Android for Facebook" fan page this morning that the issue has been resolved from other users. So it looks like people are able to log in now. That said, I am not willing to try to log off and back on to test it myself. Lets hope this is a full resolution.
However, After reading comments like these on the motorola forum and facebook forum, I still have concerns regarding this application and our privacy rights.
"Greg
Jason and Matt. An ETA for this fix is needed.
Saying it's a third party app just doesn't fly....that is like saying Android 2.0 is a third party app. If you take that line of thinking, I should buy an Iphone because Apple won't be blaming someone else for flaws in its factory functionality no matter who they paid to write the app. So Motorola, Google, Verizon, Facebook and the paid developer should be able to give a date and a workaround.
This is more than a functionality issue it is also a possible privacy issue.
Why privacy issue? Facebook requires that when an application is removed by a Facebook user under the application settings, that the developer will remove all Facebook session keys, internal user IDs, user IDs, email addresses, etc. from the developer’s local storage. In order to make this happen - Facebook provides the developer with a place to enter a Callback URL that facebook will ping when you manually delete an application from your settings. This requirement is part of the Facebook terms and conditions to insure your privacy. If a phone reset clears all client data, and you remove the “Facebook for Android” app from your Facebook app settings, then the next time you log in, it should be like you never existed and it should work (if the developer cleared his local server storage about you like he should have).
Either the phone reset didn’t restore the factory settings (not likely because people have switched phones and still have the problem) or, more likely, the developer is NOT clearing all your data from his server side storage when you remove him from your Facebook application settings.
I mention all this because it is a lot easier to clean out a bad set of database entries (given a ping from the callback URL) than it is to discover and fix and the conditions that caused the database to get messed up in the first place. To fix the underlying cause you have to start running a new server version and that requires a lot of testing to release. But cleaning up data storage to get back to a clean state should be rather straight forward.
The developers did a nice job. I only hope that they are more focused on the proper removal of all server side Facebook data when I delete there application from my Facebook settings (so we can get a fresh start and be up and running) than they are in fixing the underlying cause.
This is why an ETA and status update would be helpful.

AWSOME!! ty so much for this post your suggestion worked perfectly. If anyone else is having issues with the facebook app not working once you change your password this seems to be the only way to correct the issue. Once you clear the data you will be promted to sign back into facebook once you restart the app. Thanks again Palegirl2003.
goto settings-->manage applications-->menu-->filter-->all
then click on the facebook application to go to it's settings page
then click "clear data"

I have ran into the same issue. I found that if you go to settings-accounts and sync make sure that background data is unchecked and that your facebook account is no longer on there. then click add account re adding your facebook account. once that is done recheck background data. thats what worked for me.

I was just about to post this same thing! I had the same issue after manually updating to 2.0.1 removing the sync for my Facebook, and then readding it fixed the problem.

The issue you guys are having is differnet from the original issue. THe dev's had to fix the original outage. We, the original ppl having the issues wiped our phones and SD cards and rset FB settings and nothing helped. They fixed teh issue so now you can fix it yourself by doing the methods you describe.
