First off, some of the other posts were a little similar but not entirely. I live about 200 miles from any 4G service, so it is not an issue dropping off between 4G and 3G. I also do not have Wi-Fi enabled, so it is not an issue between the switch between Wi-Fi and 3G.
Between 2-3 times per day, my Charge loses its 3G coverage and I cannot get any data transmission. I have figured out that if I restart my phone, I will have my 3G data back again. However, this is not a long-term solution and is very annoying.
I have had my Charge for a week with the constant dropping of my 3G. Today, I finally got tired of it and thought there was maybe an error with my phone. I went to my local Verizon store and they replaced my phone. To my surprise, after having my new replaced phone for only about 2 hours, it has dropped the 3G data again. My phone is showing 4 out of 5 on the bars, so I know I am not in a low coverage area. I am getting very frustrated as I've tried talking to the local reps at the Verizon store and they are clueless. I called the national Verizon help line and they were not aware of any problems, so it didn't help me out.
I would appreciate any help from Verizon (or any other posters) that might have ideas.
I have seen some of the poor responses from Verizon "tech support" on some of the other questions. Telling me that I can return the phone plus pay a restocking fee is not an appropriate or reasonable answer. If someone can actually help, it is appreciated. Otherwise, I guess I will continue trying to catch someone's attention.

curtisdr wrote:I have the same problem. This is the second Samsung phone I've owned in the last month, and both of them have had issues with holding a connection. The other phone was the Nexus S 4G and I returned it due to that issue which is still outstanding.
Yeah, I only had about 3 instance today with what appeared to be a relatively strong signal and 'no data'. This is just getting abusrdly annoying. I'm really thinking that giving up the Iphone was not a good idea. My wife sits there with her Iphone and always gets data while I wait...and wait...and wait...and wait. Her 'cutsey' response to me is always "You got a bad phone".
Also had a brand new issue today, the phone just went dead...no response, no nothing, just a black screen. I tried holding down the power button, the home button, ANY button and nothing worked until I did a battery pull.

Both of the Charge's in our household have done the going dead thing 3 or 4 times in the last week. It usually happens right after the 4G/3G starts flaking out halfway through a page load or something like that. Most of the times, it took a battery pull to get the phone back. A few other times, the phone just rebooted after the screen went black Something is definitely hosing the phone memory for it to be doing that.

So it seems that VZW is at the bottom of this too. Since I've never seen this before since I've owned the phone and you too are confirming both of your Charges did this several times, I can only assume that the VZW 4G netowrk is working its 'magic'. I guess this is another 'feature' of the 4G network.

I just wanted to post that I do have this same issue. If I don't move my phone from the same spot I always stay with 4 bars of service yet 3g will drop out and i have to disconnect and reconnect.

B/c I wanted to get into the Unlimited Plan before it was over, I just upgraded to the Droid Charge. I'm aware of the issues, and if VZW doesn't fix them, I will yell as loudly as anyone on any and all forums that it drops data streams and that there is no reasonable fix. Would you on your computer want to reboot in the middle of a data heavy operation b/c your computer which was designed to do exactly that, didn't do exactly that? So give me my Charge, but VZW, I hope you fix it fast.

The pattern I've noticed, is that when I get the dreaded 'no data connectivity' box popping up, my signal strength can be strong but yet I show no signal type by the signal bars (3G, 4G, 1X). Until a signal type shows up, I can never get data regardless of how many bars I've got. This pattern seems to repeat every time I can't get data. This seems to happen in either solid 3G areas or mixed 3G & 4G areas.
Anyone else notice this?

I'm on my 4th charge, and this one won't even get on 1x after about 10 or so restarts to test it out. Think I may go back to iPhone.

I will be calling in today to report my similar experience. I don't know that just posting in a forum will get as much attention as calling to report an issue.
FYI...setting the phone to strictly 3G is NOT a solution to this issue. I have my phone set that way since I'm not in a 4G area and I'm still having the "Network not available..." issue.

curtisdr--That is a very good idea. As we have seen, Verizon has been totally irresponsible in providing any insight and assistance to its customers. By calling, at least someone else is made aware of the situation.
I have lost all respect for Verizon.

There's no point swapping the Charge out since this data problem is inherent in either the design of the phone or the interaction between the phone and the VZW 4G/3G network. You can go through 100 of these phones and your results won't change UNTIL VZW and/or Samsung addresses this. In the meantime we're left swinging in the breeze.
Hi vidguy7,
While the data connection issues outlined on these forum/posts may need a software update to be resolved and a phone replacement will not guaranty the resolution of the issue, please keep in mind that some troubleshooting options may improve the phone's performance in the mean time. Be assured that any software update developed to resolve this issue will be pushed out to all devices as soon as developed and released by the manufacturer.
Please review the troubleshooting options below:
1- Turn Wi-Fi off when not within reach of a Wi-Fi connection as this may interfere with the mobile data connection.
Select Menu.
Select Settings.
Select Wireless & network.
Select Wi-Fi settings.
Uncheck Wi-Fi.
2- Test for any third party application conflicts by running your phone in safe mode. If issue is not replicated while in safe mode then a third party application is causing the issue.
Press and hold the Power button
Select Restart.
Once the Samsung logo appears, press and hold the Menu button.
Continue to hold the Menu button until Safe mode appears in the lower-left of the unlock screen.
To disable safe mode, simply power off and back on.
3- Enable mobile data.
From the home screen, select and hold the status bar (located at the top of the display).
Drag the window shade to the bottom of the display.
Select Mobiledata.
4- Select 3G only when not in a 4G coverage area.
Select Menu.
Select Settings.
Select Wireless & network.
Select Mobilenetworks.
Select System selection.
Select CDMA mode (when not in 4G coverage).

Antonio, I have done 1-3, and, at times #4. 1, 3 & 4 have zero impact on this issue long term and are simply 'workarounds' that don't solve the issue permanently and merely offer a temporary 'fix' that may last for minutes or until you travel to a new location.
The problem with #2 is that the simple reboot necessary to go in to the 'safe' mode is enough to restore data to the phone as you well know. I could simply reboot the phone and not go in to safe mode and get data restored. So this really doesn't prove much about the software and its impact on this issue in any scientific way. I have very very basic software and am not one of these guys that downloads everything under the sun from the Android Market. I don't even have a battery saver or alternate launcher.
The big issue with #4 is that there are many areas that are a mix of 3G & 4G and therefore it is not practical to constantly change the settings from CDMA-only to LTE and back again. You can literally go in & out of a building and go from 4G to 3G only to return to 4G when you're back on the street. You can literally go from one block to the next and go from 4G to 3G and back again to 4G. The number of times these 2 scenarios can occur are frequent and make the manual switch hugely impractical for a fix that needs to be at the engineering level of the phone itself.
I should also note this is my 2nd Charge after the first was swapped out and they both display identical behavior. I should also note that when my first unit was returned to the VZW store on RTE 110 in Huntington, N.Y., there was another guy swapping his out for the IDENTICAL reason.
Couple this with the many other people experiencing exactly the same issue in various locations, it's hard not to come to the conclusion there is an issue with the phone and/or software. It seems to many people that the radio is just not as sensitive as it should be and not as sensitive as in 3G-only phones that don't exhibit this behavior. It also explains why some people never see this issue...they may live in a truly solid 4G area and not one that indicates solid 4G on a VZW map and is, in actuality, very spotty 4G if 4G at all.
I have PM'd VZW posters here with specific locations as to where the VZW map shows 4G and there is in fact only 3G (or at least the Charge thinks so). See a pattern here?
I will say this, when the Charge works it works very well and the 4G speeds are exceptional. But these intermittent data issues are more than a consumer should have to tolerate. I'm more than willing to wait for a fix IF there is truly a fix coming. I've dealt with issues under my control like poor battery life by merely buying a large capacity battery as well as an extra, slim battery. Unfortunately there is no comparable fix to this data issue.
It would really be beneficial if VZW would keep us up-to-date on fixes that are being worked on between VZW and Samsung. You are the 2nd VZW employee to allude to work being conducted behind the scenes between the two companies. But it would be nice for someone at VZW to keep us informed on a more regualar basis.

Hey Verizon Guys... I had a conversation with someone who had the problems that are being complained about in this thread. He claimed that the Verizon store installed Green Power on his phone before he left the store without his knowledge. He also said something about a setting that was disabled that allowed the phone to wake once a data packet is received. These two combined problems made his phone drop data connections. Uninstalling Green Power and enabling that setting fixed his phone.
Here are my questions:
1. Is it appropriate/allowed for your stores to install these apps on people's phones?
2. What is this setting on the Charge that does or doesn't allow the wake on packets received? Is this something real?
Here's a portion of the conversation:
However, the Verizon store DID install a Green Power Saver App because they
thought it was so great to install Apps without telling the customer (because
they get too many 4G phones back due to perceived battery issues). I had assumed
it was just part of the bloatware. Ironically, there is also a setting that is
apparently disabled on new Charges (to wake data connections on data packets).
Those combined screwed me over and also make the problem reproducible on brand
new/out of the box Charges. Competent Verizon techs should be able to see this
immediately and enable the setting.

I just purchased a Droid Charge last week (to get in on the unlimited data plan) and am experiencing the same as everyone else in this thread.
I unistalled Juice Defender and Android Booster, no effect yet. I'm in NYC and should have 4G or at the very least 3G all the time, my friend with a Thunderbolt always has 4G. I still have until Tuesday to decide whether to keep the phone or return it (less the "restocking fee". I'd really like to keep it, I like the phone and the screen, but if I can't get 3G/4G at all, what's the point?

Dan, your experience illustrates what most others with this issue have determined, the radio in the Charge is less sensitive than other phones. If that proves to be the case, there is nothing that will be able to be done. You'll either have to make the best of it, return it and eat the restocking fee (many wish they could do just that!), bite the bullet and sell your Charge at a later date and buy a phone that works or just wait until the Bionic comes out and see if the feedback on that phone is any better.

Well, fingers crossed. But uninstalling the Juice Defender and the other optimizer does appear to be working today. Mostly 4G all day, and the one time it cut out to no coverage I was able to toggle the airplane mode to get it back on. So let's hope it stays this way, and the battery life isn't completely compromised.

I never had Juice Defender and many others haven't either that still have the 'data connectivity' issue. But hey, if it works in your case I'm happy for you.
