DROID X2 - using punctuation in text is freezing keyboard

NikkiNoodle1127

Hi! I'm hoping someone can help and am hoping it's an easy fix (though I'm not confident! lol)...

I've had my Droid X2 for about a month now (LOOOOOVE IT!!!). Suddenly when I was texting today, when I hit the period on the keyboard three times, the keyboard froze on the screen. I was able to get out of messaging and navigate through my phone, however, the keyboard was still frozen on the screen.

I would shut off my phone to clear the keyboard from the screen (now I just avoid punctuation - which is not fun! lol). I tried resetting the phone to fix the issue (powered off, removed battery). I also tried updating my roaming capabilities (dialed *228) - hey, you never know! lol Neither of these attempts fixed the issue.

I have the extended warranty so I imagine it's still covered, but I obviously would like to try to avoid replacing the phone. I have considered doing a factory reset, but am hoping to avoid this solution (if possible!) as well.

Any thoughts/suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks so much,

Nikki :smileyhappy:

In addition to clearing cache, I would also suggest to download a third party app and try texting with that.  This well help us narrow if there is something wrong with the default text app.  Please repost with results.  Thank you.

Try going to Settings -- Applications -- Manage Apps -- Select your texting, and keyboard app and select Clear Cache for both.

Nevermind. They are under different names so I couldn't find them at first.

I only cleared cache for my 'Multi-touch keyboard' and it seemed to have solved the problem. Thank you so much.

I have to do this atleast once a week now. Atleast I now know how to fix it for a little while.

I tried to go in and clear my cache but it already says there's nothing in it, and my keyboard still freezes. I also tried downloading another app for texting and had the same issue. Any other fixes?

Have you tried the CLEAR CACHE proceudre at Power up? or just via the Settings / Applications?

Wiping cache partition

  • Power off
  • Power On Holding Home Key
  • When Andy with Exlamation Point Shows up Press BOTH Volume keys
  • Use Volume Keys to navigate to "wipe cache partition" and tap power button to select
  • Wait for it to finish and select reboot system

When does Andy show up? I think I turned that off when I first got the phone so when I powered up my phone it just went to the main screen.

Not sure what you mean -- Andy shows up after a brief amount of time holding the HOME button and powering up. Like maybe 20-30 secs?

You know -- I just NOW saw that this is a DROID X2 ...  sorry ...  (this being a DROID X forum I missed that.)  I think the "maintenance boot" process is a tad different for a DROID X2 ...  Maybe try a Search up above ... or maybe Wildman has those procedures - I think he has an X2.

Thanks for the suggestions but even Wildman's ideas didn't fix the issue...I'm just frustrated because this issue is marked as solved but the solution posted isn't working. I've only had the phone for about a month so these types of things shouldn't be happening already.

I thought this issue was resolved since it was marked solved.....   When you say maintance I am guessing you are speaking Safe Mode and you should be able to find that info at http://support.vzw.com/clc/devices/knowledge_base.html?id=43641

Yah I tried the safe mode suggestion, and I downloaded the smart keyboard app and neither one fixed the issue, it still froze when I tried to use a punctuation mark.

That is such a unique situation, I really cant get how inputting text of any kind could cause this issue, do it seem to matter if you in landscape or portrait view?

Nope, it does it whether I'm in portrait or landscape mode.

Sounds like a hard reset attempt before contacting Verizon and request a replacement device because if a hard reset doesnt work it will have to be some kind of hardware bug...

What is a hard reset? Is it something I can do?

Hard reset is when you wipe the device of all personal data and apps and restores it to a factory state like you just open the box and pulled it out...  If you call CS this is one of the main steps that they will have you do before deciding how to handle the device issues..

Preferred method

  1. From a home screen, select App menu (located in the lower right).
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select Privacy.
  4. Select Factory Data Reset.
  5. To clear all personal data, ensure Erase internal storage (media area) is enabled then select Reset Phone.
NoteEnabled when a check mark is present.
NoteIf presented, enter the current passcode or draw the unlock pattern.
  6. Select Erase Everything.

 Alternate method

  1. Power the device off.
NotePress and hold the Power button then select Power off.
NoteIf the device isn't responding Remove / replace the battery.
  2. Press and hold Volume down then press the Power button (approx. 3-5 seconds) to power the device on. Continue holding Volume down.
  3. When Fastboot appears (located at the top), release Volume down.
  4. Press Volume down (seven times) to select Android Recovery then press Volume up.
  5. When presented with the Android screen, simultaneously press Volume up / down.
  6. Press Volume down (twice) to select wipe data / factory reset then press the Power button.
  7. Press Volume down (once) to select Yes -- delete all user data then press the Power button.
  8. When the data wipe is complete, ensure reboot system now is selected then press the Power button.

Hi juliez,

As indicated by Wildman (thanks), a Hard Reset is the next troubleshooting step to resolve the issues you are experiencing with your phone. If issue continues after performing a Hard Reset your device may need to be replaced.

Your phone includes a one year manufacturer's warranty and you may qualify for Certified Like New Replacement. For warranty replacement details and process please visit this Link.

Please keep in mind that performing a hard reset will remove ALL data including the Google account, system data, application data, application settings, and downloaded applications.
