I just spoke to a tech. rep but, forgot to ask. If I have my phone set to send reminders of items on my gmail calendar...is that shown as data usage on my bill? Also, it shows 'time' that data is being used...but not amount of time (because it's in kb etc.) So, how do I convert the amount of time using my DroidX for instant messaging (not texting) or say sending and receiving e-mail. If I'm using it to retrieve e-mail and I'm sent a small book (50 or more documents) does that count toward my usage, even if I'm not downloading the documents to my laptop?

If you have your email check back with server to retrieve updates this will still be accessing the web and yes this will be classified as data usage. Also the reminders are synced to your device so the alarms or notifications you receive will be from the phones calendar and not the web bit when the sync app access the web to sync appointments or reminders information, this will use data and it will register as data usage.

As long as you are downloading information from over the web it will count as data usage, most files are small and really dont use any large amount of data but if you are on unlimited data it is minor..
Iif you are curious of data usage you can log into account and under the data usage tab you will see the amount of data uses and break it down as Text Messaged and Domestic Data Used

So, calendar reminders (which I might receive when not actively using my phone) still count as data being received..or not? What is considered alot of data? So, unless I'm actually downloading something to my phone from the web/internet or actively using a program like chat data isn't being used. For example...data is not being used for my e-mail until I actually 'access' my e-mail from the phone?

I'm considering getting this phone as a 16th birthday (or the iPhone) for my son. BUT, being that I am a parent and I want to monitor who/what/where/when...to a certain degree anyway...will I be able to check and know if/when he's using this phone not for text messaging but for instant messaging (since it will require a data package) and if so, how can I tell?
