Difficulty calibrating compass.

I have been attempting to calibrate the Driod X's compass for a week now. No such luck. Every time I do the compass is still way off. I've attempted to both use the GPS as current location or phone network and to use true north or magnetic north. Still it sets it a good 50 - 90 degrees off at best (And different every time you calibrate). Where  live true north and magnetic north are within 1.5 degrees. Im using the north star for calibrations which is 3 degrees off at the moment from true north.

The calibration does say its working. I've also used a start mapping application to do the calibration as well as the one in the phone.

Any suggestions?

There is only one way to calabrate the compass...   Settings > Location and Security > Calibrate Compass > Calibrate  Rotate device all direction 360 degrees until app says compass is calibrated...  any other way wont work.

I just went outside and tried calibrating mine, and it took about a minute and a half before the compass turned green. (indicating calibration is complete) Some phones may take longer depending on your location.

Are you attempting to calibrate inside a structure?  It might make a difference if your building has a lot metal or electical stuff that may affect the magnetic field.

Just some possibilities......

Good luck,

I found a way to always calibrate my compass in about 30 to 40 seconds every time and it awlays works (compass turns green)

To the OP:  I'm not sure if you're saying you get a good calibrate (meaning the compass turned green during the calibration) and it still is not accurate?  Or are you saying you can't get the compass to turn green during calibrate?

If it's the former I would try recalibrating away from anything that may potentially interfere magnetically.  And if that doesn't work I would ask for a replacement.

If it's the latter, here is a way that always works for me to calbrate:

Before you tap the Calibrate button, observe the animation that is being shown on the screen of the phone flipping around.  This is showing you exactly how to do it.

Hold the phone so it is facing you.

Rotate the phone once "towards" you -- all the way around as shown -- and I try to take about 2 secs for each step

Flip (Rotate)  the phone one full turn to the left.

Spin (Rotate)  the phone one full turn to the left (counterclockwise)

Spin (Rotate)  the phone one full turn to the right (clockwise)

Flip (Rotate) the phone one full turn to the right.

Rotate the phone one full turn "away" from you.

Repeat this sequence until calibrated.

This is exactly what the animation shows before you press the calibrate button.  I find that if I do it like this, it is exactly when I start my 4th repeat (when I am rotating "towards" me) the compass will turn green for me at that spot everytime.  And it takes about 30 to 40 secs for me.

I came across this tip in another forum, I wish I could remember where, so the person who really deserves the credit could get it.

The calibration goes green so it's saying the calibration is successfull yet the compass is still way off. I am attempting this outdoors in a very open area and using the north star to compare the results to. As I said prior the north star and true north and magnetic north are all within 2 degrees of each other in my area. Every time the compass calibration is successful it's off about 50 - 90 degrees. Over the last week I've calibrated this compass successfully maybe 50 times. The odd part about it is each time I get a different result but always off by 50 - 90 degrees.

This seems like a system error. A factory reset will restore this back to your phone. The steps to performing the reset are listed below:

1. Hold Home Button and press power (continue to hold until you see the triangle with an asterisk like in step 2)

2. Screen will show a Android with a triangle with asterisk

3. Let Go of Home Button and Power

4. Press Search Button (Far Right Button)

5. A blue menu will show at top of page, scroll to Format Device

6. Select Yes to verify

7. Allow format to complete (Information at bottom of page will go through a few steps)

8. Once Format is complete Blue Menu will show at top again, select Reboot

9. Sometimes phone hangs after reboot and will take a while but if no response after 5 - 10 minutes, pull the battery and reinsert. (Device usually starts fine after this)
