Does Froyo need a task killer?

I've read that w/Froyo there is no longer a need for a task killer. But, I've also seen some task killers designed for Froyo. So do I need one & which one is the best? Free or paid...doesn't matter to me.

2.1 didn't need one either.

People have to get out of the Windows mindset - this is Linux

It's the task killer that's eating up your battery, or rather the endless loop of app start & stops.

This argument really is a lost cause.  Eventhough it's been proven and documented that task killers are more of a detriment to the phone, people will still argue that they NEED them til they're blue in the face.  The majority of problems users experience can usually be traced back to task killers and there's a reason that any real android forum/blog recommends against them.  Misuse of task killers is probably the number one problem with people just killing everything including required android services.  If you're using it correctly, then you don't really need it as Android will allow you to force stop misbehaving apps natively.  And just because an app shows that it's running doesn't necessarily mean that it's doing anything or using resources.

The api changed for 2.2 so the task killers cannot actually "kill" the apps anymore.

With that said they OS has been reworked to be more efficient.

The task killers on 2.2 will cause you to run out of battery faster (the system will close an app and the os will open it back up... it is a constant cycle which causes battery use).

If you do get a task killer you need one that will allow you to "force close."

I still suggest not having one if you have 2.2

I would like to know more on this task killer issue,

I know after using a task killer on the 2.2  Media streaming apps stay open like Music or Pandora or Slacker radio and will not even try to close but games I leave in the background and can seem them running in the task manager, then when I tell it to Kill all, all the games go away.  I have to believe that is doing what the task killer is suppose to and how it should be.  Linux or not, there is no reason to have 12 games open in the back ground.  I think a task kill is a must, but this new Droid 2.2 wasn't ready to be released and has some bugs.  It would be nice if we had an official document on 2.2 and how its suppose to run, if we are suppose need a task killer or not.  HOWEVER I must say, if it was indeed a must have, I think the OS would have one built in.

It probably doesn't help that the folks in the Verizon stores tell everyone who buys a phone that task killers are a "must have" before people leave the store.

I deleted my Advanced Task Killer and my phone is running flawlessly and battery life is as good as ever. Also, I have ZERO issues with Froyo 2.2. I also downloaded and installed Adobe Flash Player and it works also with no issues.

When we bought our phones, the task killer was installed for us, too. We have not experienced any problems w/2.2...don't like some of the changes but no problems.

Alright....I guess its time to get rid of the task killer.

Wow. Good to know! I was wondering why an app would start up the second I killed it. 2.1 it worked fine but I guess 2.2 is that much better! Time to get rid of it!
