Droid 2 Data Plan Question

Ok, so Im considering getting a Motorola Droid 2, and I cant really afford the $30 unlimited plan right now, They recently released a $15 data plan with a 150mb data limit, and from what Ive read thats not a lot at all and Im likely to go over said limit if I use the Droid much at all. However, from what I have read, apparently if you connect to a Wifi network it wont count towards your MB usage, and Im around wifi most of the time so if connecting to wifi doesnt count towards my MB usage this shouldnt be a problem for me. Can anyone here confirm/explain how the Droid wifi usage works, and if a $15 data plan would be sufficient if I can connect to wifi for a majority of the time? Thanks

In theory, yes, you could do this. You are correct that using wifi doesn't count against your data usage (data usage is only 3G usage and when wifi is connected 3G is off).

Now, with that said I can tell you that I average 300 - 400 MB of data per week on "light usage". I don't stream music, and I don't watch videos (typically) on my device. I've heard of others who do much closer to 500 MB a day as well.

For me, trying to limit usage to 150 MB / month would be impractical, but your mileage may vary.

You can get an estimate on how much data you would be using on your device. Click on the link below for a usage calculator.

There is one thing I would watch out for. After a period of inactivity (The screen is off and you havent pressed any buttons) the phone will automatically shut off the Wifi radio to conserve battery, which means it will switch over to 3G.

You should be careful and watch what programs sync constantly in the background (like email, facebook, twitter for example) and how often. This could potentially put you over the 150MB limit if you aren't careful.

Don't even think about it... it won't work.  Stay with the unlimited.
