Droid 2 Global Reboots & Blank Screen issues

This is my second Droid 2 Global.  The first one was replaced within the 30 day purchase period due to a battery charging issue.  Verizon tried replacing the battery (that gave an 1 hour a day more), tried extended battery, no change, could only get 5-6 hours life a day even with the extended batter.  Replaced the phone a week ago with 2nd one, brand new, and now have several issues except the battery. The battery life is great, get a full day, 7 AM - midnight, and rarely goes less than 30%.  But, new issue developed:

1.  Screen will just go blank at random times, and cannot get the screen display to work without pulling the battery.  Even hitting the off button on the top, it will not turn off or restart.  A call can come in, if I guess where to hit on the screen, I can answer it or with my bluetooth headset.

2.  Frequent reboots, but short ones, not the full on one.  Today as an example it rebooted 5 times, every 1-2 hours. It will do it in the middle of a call, ending the call, or even when it is just sitting idle.  Another time, I was starting to dial a number, or look up a contact, and boom, reboot.

A couple of notes,

1.  the first Global 2 did not do that, just had a charging issue with the phone.  But the apps were exactly the same.  Yes, it would do a reboot, but a full one randomly once a week or so, but not every other hour.

2.  I am not new to Droid, I also have an original one purchased over a year ago, same apps.  I just replaced it 30 days ago or so.  It rarely rebooted.  I just replaced it because it was too slow in response and the battery was starting to age.

3.  Been removing Apps that I have been running successfully for over a year thinking one of the updates started this, but I am running out of possibilities.

Any suggestions other than a full factory reset.  That just does not make sense I would have to do that since the phone is only 7 days old, and it has been doing this since its birth.

I understand your frustration in this matter. I suggest completing a master reset of the device. Please back up the phone's information on your PC before the reset, since you will lose the data and the phone will be restored to factory settings. I have included the steps for the master reset below.

  • Turn off the phone
  • Power on phone while pressing "X" key on qwerty keypad - release "X" and power key after you see Motorola batwings.
  • You should now see an "!" in a triangle with Android guy
  • Press the "Search" key on qwerty keypad to enter factory menu, this will unhide the menu and show the following options
    1. Reboot system Now
    2. Apply sdcard:update.zip
    3. Wipe Data/Factory Reset
    4. Wipe Cache Partition
  • Use Vol Up / Vol down to navigate to "wipe data/factory reset" and then use Camera side key or Menu key to select "wipe data/factory reset"
  • Use Vol Up / Vol down to navigate to  "Yes delete all user data" and then use Camera key to select "Yes - delete all user data"
  1. Wait for operation to complete (maybe 1 minute or so) and then press camera key to select "reboot system now"

If you have any additional issues, please let us know.

Thank you and have a great day!

I began to have reboot issues as well a few days after I downloaded the last update to my phone. I have also downloaded a few apps but had downloaded some prior to the update and had no issues with rebooting.  I posted a similar question on the board trying to determine why this is occurring as well.  It's odd and as you stated can occur at any moment but it isn't quite annoying to me since it doesn't occur everyday.  I performed a roaming update to the phone and I thought that had fixed the issue until last night when I had gone at least 2 days without a reboot and suddenly I touched the phone to unlock it while charging and it rebooted.

I hope someone can pinpoint this issue.

Mine tends not to reboot, but to simply shutdown every so often (D2 not global). It did it last night as I was reading an email. Not touching the screen or any buttons, just reading and bloop. Off. It only happens to me every couple days or so, which makes it really hard to come up with steps to reproduce.

To the OP. If your getting this every hour or so, have you tried booting into "safe mode" to see if it's a 3rd party app causing the issue?

I have all of the same issues. The phone reboots, screen blanks in the middle of using, battery is only good for a few hours, tops, even when fully charged. This is by far the worst phone that I have ever owned. We have two of them, both with the same, or similar problems. From reading up on them, it sounds like everyone is having about the same luck. I can't believe that Motorola released this thing to the public.

My D2G has started acting like it is possessed, don't know what
the hell it is but apparently it has happened to a bunch of people, don't know
y it started, or how to fix it, if it's a bad screen digitizer I would love to
know because I would just buy a new one and change it, but I have a feeling it's
another type of hardware issue. I had insurance on my old phone but I don't
think it will carry over to this one because I did not buy it from Verizon, so
now I am going to be stuck with a $400 paper weight. If anyone has any info you
could add that would be great.

I have tried the factory data reset and it has not helped my phone. I am still having the reboot issue, 1-3 times per day although not every day. It will happen when I go to answer a call, text, or email or just go to unlock it. My phone is less than a year old and has no damage so I am not sure of the problem.
