Droid 3 powers itself on

Not sure how it's possible, hardware-wise, but it has happened to me 3 times already. I completely power off my D3 and 2 to 15 minutes later, it powers itself on. Power-off is completely normal, it goes through all the stages.

I guess it's becoming self-aware. I, for one, welcome our new Droid overlords...

@marsbriggs   I can definitely appreciate the concerns you are having with the software update.  I have had software updates before that have not been beneficial to my phone.  The problems you seem to be known issue with the update.  There is a fix that will be pushed out to resolve this but in the mean time have you done a master reset on your phone?  This measure can serve as an alternate resolution for software updates like this.

You can follow these steps to perform the reset:

From the main screen, touch menu tab

Touch Settings

Touch Privacy

Touch Factory Data reset

User has the option of Erasing SD Card - if desired check "Erase SD Card"

Touch Reset Phone

Touch Erase Everything

Once you take this measure try using your phone as normal and repost if you continue to have issues.  I hope this helps.  Thank you.

That's strange. Either we begin to bow down and celebrate a monumental development in A.I., or find out why this is happening. My test Droid 3 keeps powered down.  Is it powering on when the device is moved or in your pocket? Is it on the charger or off the charger? Have you tried removing the battery to see if that makes a difference?

Let us know how we can help further if this is a pressing issue.

It powers itself on when sitting on the table, with nothing touching it and not connected to the charger. It does not happen very often - in a month I have had the phone, it has happened 3 or 4 times.
And I'm not the only one that experinced it: http://www.droidforums.net/forum/droid-3/161661-when-i-turn-off-my-phone-will-turn-automatically.htm...  and

My wife and I both have the Droid 3 and almost every night when we turn them off, on of them will turn itself back on 2 - 15 minutes later.

Nothing worst then being woken up in the middle of the night with a load 'You've got mail' message.

Thanks Hemway and Ba_rt for bringing this to our attention. I checked and we have seen a few reports of this with this phone. Our product team is currently investigating, but haven't been able to duplicate as of yet. I did advise more customers are having this issue, so we can continue the investigation.

Hey, all,

That is an interesting problem, and I will keep an eye out to see if I can duplicate it.  I recently moved to the Droid 3 and my wife has one as well.  I will keep an eye and if the problem is duplicated I will post here.  Just a hunch, I bet it is a 3rd party app that is causing the problem.

My wife's and my phone continues to do this. Called Verizon support last week and they said nobody has called to complain. The technician had me pull the battery, dial *228 to reprogram he phone but the phone still does it.

My Droid 3 has done it 3 different times. I power the phone down and it shuts off and I place it on the table. Within 5 seconds to a minute it powers back up on it's own. It's almost like hitting 'restart' on your computer instead of 'shut down'. I see no particular pattern to this except it has happened about once a week and the time it has restarted itself were all between 8:30 PM and 11:30 PM. The phone works pretty well overall. Screen lag when exiting and app or webpage is TERRIBLY slow, especially for a dual core phone, other times its fine. I think this phone is a software update away from being an indispensable smartphone. All that needs to be done, is to fix the ram allocation issue so the screen redraw goes away. HTC Android phones whip around very quickly through their motions.

I have a Droid R2D2, and I have been having this same problem ever since I made the unfortunate mistake of applying the Android software update 2 weeks ago.  It takes two times for me to power down my phone.  The first time, it always turns itself back on within 5 minutes.  Like others, the phone is by itself on a table, not connected or with anything touching the screen.

SammuelP, my wife and I both have Droid 3's and have had this problem (phone turns itself back on after being powered down) since July when we got them. I've tried all of the suggestions that have been posted here and on the Motorola forum site, including the reset process, and we still have the problem. I was told to wait for the system update (went out last week) and it would fix the problem but it didn't.

I see you are asking @Marsbriggs to do a reset. Is this because it is the canned answer Verizon is using to fix problems they don't have a clue on how to fix or is it a documented fix? I did the reset before the system update and it didn't help and will be damned if I do one again because I had to resetup my Droid 3 back up to the way it was before the reset, which was a pain in the butt.

If the reset was the fix, wouldn't they be telling all of the people over there to do it? Theya re grasping at straws just like Verizon.

If this is a documented fix, please post a link to the document so I can read it. I want to see something in writing that says the reset will work before I reset my phone.

I'm having the same problem on my Droid 3.  However, mine didn't start until the recent Verizon update.

You are not the only one having this problem.  Pretty embarrassing when you shut it off on a plane and it powers itself back on and then takes a call while still in the air.  Lots of dirty looks from flight attendants.

As the original poster, you have the power to remove and change which post is marked as the solution. http://community.vzw.com/t5/help/faqpage/faq-category-id/solutions#solutions

I'm most definitely NOT a VZW employee. If a post answered your question, please mark it as the answer.

We have two Droid 3 phones and both do this almost daily.   We contacted Verizon phone support and talked to second level person about two weeks ago.   They said this had never been reported before, which by this forum and the number of posts on it I can see was not correct.    That support rep was supposed to contact us back within 2-3 days with an update, but we have heard nothing from them.

Worst is having it come back on during plane flights!   Flight crew is not happy when they hear a phone saying "Droid" after everything is supposed to be off.

We have found if you turn it off and plug in the wall charger, it does not usually power back on, but that is not a real solution.

"We contacted Verizon phone support and talked to second level person about two weeks ago.   They said this had never been reported before"

How do you know a rep/tech from Verizon is lying?

Their lips are moving.

You know the memo came down to deny any knowledge of this problem.

Total and complete cover up!!!

Verizon is nothing but another greedy too big to fail, billion dollar corrupt conglomerate.

As stated before, my wife and I both have Droid 3's and both have the power up problem.

I tried doing a hard reset on my phone that wiped the phone and put it back to factory settings (note: did this after the recent OS update). After it powered up, the only thing I did was log into my Google account and setup my Gmail. Ran like this for a few days then configured a couple more email accounts. I would wait three days and if the phone stayed off each time I turned it off, I'd install applications. I first added/configured preloaded applications, one at a time, waiting three days before adding the next application. Took me a couple of weeks of doing it this way before I had all of the applications I wanted installed and working. Went a whole week without my phone powering on by its self.

Assumed (you what they say about assume) that the hard reset fixed the problem so I hard reset my wife’s phone and reinstalled everything she had installed (which isn't much). Three days went by without the phones powering themselves up, than bang, both phones started to turn themselves back one. Sometimes they'll turn back on seconds after being turned off while other times it may be minutes (once almost 15 minutes later).

The hard reset (Settings ==> Privacy ==> Factory data reset ==> selected both internal and SD storage erase) doesn't help so don’t get suckered into wasting your time.
