JerryF wrote:I read somewhere that the battery should be charged to at least to 50% or more before updating. To me this would mean having a fully charged battery (99%) before starting. Just a thought for what it's worth!

JerryF - very good advice. I did it with a fully charged battery.
Also - you do NOT need to remove the battery to put it in download mode. Just need to turn the phone off and then tap the power button while holding the vol down button. You need/want the battery in while the update is taking place so that it reboots correctly. Some instructions on upgrading say to remove the battery but this is not correct.
Final note: many of the step by step instructions also show you how to install Clockwork Mod Recovery at the same time. It's a great tool to have for future updates but it is NOT necessary if you don't want to install it. I installed it a few days after I upgraded and am glad I did but it is not needed to go to Gingerbread 2.3.6.

Rifrafter.
I copied all your info just in case your posts suddenly disappear. Nice job you did!
Please keep us posted how it's working and if you discover any shortcomings...thanks.
Thanks again and best personal regards,

I am wondering if I could update my Charge while I am still on my X2. I mean...should be able to right? Just wouldnt have service correct? Id like to play around with it first on wifi and what not to get a good feel and check it all out. What do you guys think? Possible?
If you can boot your phone now without service then I'd think you should be able to but I'm not an expert.
I think I remember a part of the first re-boot process where it goes out and validates your SIM in order to give you service but that is near the end of the reboot and shouldn't prevent your phone from booting up so you can use apps or whatever. It will probably just say your SIM is OK but you have no service and then continue booting but I don't know for sure..
You WILL be upgraded though....once you flash - you're on GB 2.3.6.
Hope that helps.

Thanks riffrafter. I've been waiting for a while and am ready to take the self-update plunge.
Just a question, did you also flash CWM or just go with with the 2.3.6 update?
<update> nevermind, i see you addressed this in a previous post. Thanks for all the great information.

Your welcome dragonlady. Let me know what you think once you've completed the upgrade and had a little time to play with it.

Flash the update using the .tar. file in Odin then reboot. Then reboot then flash the CWM in odin Reboot. Make sure you use the correct version of CWM as the stard version doesn't work on the charge.
Im running 2.3.6 with CWM working smoothly. Also updated to the 4.0 kernal. Runs sooth.

You need the 08-17 version of CWM for the Droid Charge.
Here's a link to the correct version of Clockwork Mod Recovery for the Droid Charge for those that want to install that too.

It's really sad that Verizon sells you a 2 year contract and then has no obligation to support the phone. I think the answer is to go with the Nexus 4 unlocked phone when it comes back since Verizon won't be able to muck up the system with all their junk and it will always have the latest operating system. Better yet - no contract.
