I followed the link and just for fun put a no-contract Droid Charge in my cart to see the "price" - it came up $679.99.

How did you get it set up for free??

Probably it's free as a new-contract phone.

Good thought.  I went back and tried that alternative and the cost for the phone would be $.01 with a new contract.  Don't know if it's new or a refurb...did not read the page that closely.

It's a brand new phone for .01 and resigning a contract jumps to $119.99.  I'm sure that will get lowered soon as that's not fair for people who have been a customer for a long time.  Still even so, it beats the $299.99 they want at a verizon store.  That just goes to show how much of a rip off and greedy verizon really is.

I'm going to have to disagree with the "greedy" comment Phil.   It's the way of the world when you want the "bleeding edge" of technology.  Whenever ANY new technology hits the streets, it's very pricey to be an early adopter.  Wait 3-6 mos and low and behold, the price drops because there's something new on the shelf.  So my advise to you is "patience grasshopper" and you will be rewarded.

Amazon.com: Samsung Droid Charge (Verizon Wireless): Cell Phones & Accessories

Free $15 in App store credit too :smileysurprised:

Ironically it might be overpriced at that price.  IOW, perhaps they should pay US to take the phone.

I caught this deal at AmazonWireless about a week and a half ago.  $119.99 on 2 year renewal.  No tax.  It's the first time I bought a phone anywhere but the Verizon corporate store.  Everything has gone well and I would do it again.  Got the $15 Amazon credits for MP3s, Kindle and Amazon Apps (5 bucks each).  The phone also came with a card for $25 credit at the Samsung Media Hub.  Very happy with this price.

The only drawback in using Amazon Wireless (or any other dealer except Verizon) is a separate agreement to keep the phone on the line for 180 days (6 mos) so the retailer can get their rebate from the manufacturer.  If you swap out the phone before that, you get hit with a separate $250 charge.  I only realized this could be a problem after I bought the phone.  I was speaking to an Amazon Wireless phone rep who was helping me get my phone provisioned at Verizon.  I mentioned that I was keeping my Storm2 in case I went to Europe since I could just swap the Charge out for the Storm and use it in Europe.  She then informed me about the penalty.  I asked if it would apply if I only swapped the Charge out for a week or two.  After putting me on hold to check with her supervisor, she came back and said that ANY INTERRUPTION in having the Charge on the line would trigger the penalty.  The problem may be with the manufacturer, but I'm not sure.

I don't have any plans to go to Europe in the next six months, but I thought I would mention this since it could bite someone in the butt.  Overall, I would buy from Amazon again.  $269 plus tax (after $30 NE2) from Verizon vs. $119 with no tax from Amazon.  Very happy here!

Early adopter? lol I don't know what you're talking about.  Yeah verizon is very greedy!  Amazon gets it at the same time Verizon does, sometimes sooner and they have never been as high as verizon is.  3-6 months later and verizon is still charging the outrageous price of $299.99.  If you don't think verizon still charging $299.99 while Amazon is giving it away practically for free is greedy, there is something wrong with you.
