I got my first Droid last May, 2010...ALL YEAR I dealt with heating up issues and seriously short battery life issues. I got a replacement battery from Verizon...did well for 1 week and then battery life went to 2 hours. I had wi-fi, GPS and blue tooth all shut off. I had Juice Defender , advanced task killer AND Battery Life apps. Nothing worked. I got a long life battery (I think 1750?) from Seidio. That too didn't last that long...5 hours. I traded it in, got another and it worked for about 2 weeks where I was getting 8-10 hours of life! The thing periodically heated up on me...HOT...I finally had it after 11-1/2 months. One time I calculated the temp to be 123 degrees. FINALLY Verizon heard me and send me a new phone 4-5 weeks ago. This "pre-owned" phone was a dream. It worked great for about 3 weeks. Battery life was longer, it didn't heat up etc...then the 4th week it started getting caught up in a start up loop. What would happen is that I would get no warning the battery was going low, it would go to a start up screen like it was rebooting itself and then get stuck there. The only way to get out of it was to remove the battery. I couldn't even turn the phone off. Then when I would put the SAME battery back in, it would show that I have 3 green bars of battery life and that it wasn't even dying! It would work fine for while. Sometimes, when I was away from home when this happened, I would just leave the phone in the car and 90 minutes later it would still be trying to boot up...going through the white HTC screen and then going into the DROID red screen mode, back to white HTC etc! Then I thought maybe it was the battery and decided to CHANGE the battery and the same thing happened, except when I tried to start the thing up with a freshly charged! It got stuck in this loop for 10 minutes and then corrected itself.
So, I since then ordered a THIRD phone. It worked great for 3 days and is doing the same thing! Today it has been stuck in that start up loop for 4 hours now! It never warned me it was going to happen, it just started to shut down like I was out of battery life and then got stuck. I am very frustrated. This sounds like some sort of glitch in the software of my account, not even the hardware since this is my 3rd phone nor a battery since I have used 4 different batteries on this phone. Both of these "new" pre-owned phones were reset prior to me going onto them. I hate the thought of needed to reset it AGAIN! Then needing to reset all my data etc.
Any thoughts out there. My husband is thoroughly ticked. My patience is wearing thin. I love my Droid, but fed up.

I only read halfway through your post before I found your problem.... Stop adding the same apps to each device. This is most definitely an app issue. I would suggest deleting ALL of them, wait a few days, and then slowly start adding them back one-by-one. You'll find your problem app(s) and will have a working phone.
Also, task killers and anti-virus apps are not necessary and only drain your battery and cause problems. I would be willing to bet that is what's causing your battery heating issues, as well as your battery saver apps. It should work just fine and have a good battery life (especially the Incredible - known for battery life) without any excess apps trying to help it. You can also go to Settings -- Battery and Data manager -- Battery Usage -- and you'll see which apps use the most of your battery, and will be able to delete or Force Stop them to stop that from happening.
