Hello All.
Well it looks like my first post is going to be a request for help. Hopefully someone may be able to give me some additional options after reading this lengthy post, because I believe that I have exhausted every test a consumer can do.
Issue Overview
After recent update from android version 2.2 to version 2.2.1 the bluetooth to car connectivity continuously loops in a connecting/disconnecting pairing cycle.
Phone Details
Motorola Droid X
System Version 2.3.340.MB810.Verizon.en.US
Android Version 2.2.1
Baseband Version BP_C_01.09.07P
Kernel Version 2.6.32.9-g55626e1
ERI 5
PRL 51926
Car Details
2011.5 BMW M3 (essentially a 3-series electronics system)
Verified compatibility with android 2.1 and was working on 2.2; broke when phone update to 2.2.1 was applied
Noteworthy Items
* I received from Verizon stating that my phone had been updated and to visit a website link for more details... I promptly deleted the text and web address thinking nothing of it. Mistake #1.
* The bluetooth pair had been working in the car and this is the only change to the phone that I can think of. I'm 99% sure it was only running 2.2 until this change in mid-January.
* The pairing worked fine with Android version 2.2 (had car for 1 week with no pairing issues).
* The car software was not updated until after the phone had stopped maintaining a pair with the car.
* My work phone (Blackberry 8330 on Sprint) works fine in my car with bluetooth. Only the Droid X v2.2.1 is broken.
* I spent 2 hours on the phone with Verizon testing every bluetooth option and disconnecting then repairing with car multiple times. They blamed BMW and said to take it up with them even though nothing on the car had changed.
* The phone will maintain a connection with a Parrot bluetooth speaker system and various other handsfree devices.
* BMW has reflashed the car and updated the software. The next step is to replace the vehicle 'combox' that controls the bluetooth and electronics system, but BMW engineers do not believe this will resolve the issue after looking at the car logs and testing functionality.
Symptoms
1) Initialize a new pair from the phone to the car. The phone bluetooth is turned on and the car is put into pair mode. The phone sees the car as an audio device and a pair is established.
2) The car sends two requests to the phone for various contact lists, etc. I approve the requests and check the box so it does not need to request access each time.
3) The car begins to load the contact list as indicated by a spinning circle similar to the Windows 7 pointer loading graphic.
4) The pair remains connected but the car still indicates that it is loading something after 2 minutes.
5) The pair drops and the connection is terminated.
6) After another 1-2 minutes the pairing is once again seen and attempts to connect and load once again.
7) Repeat steps 3-6 endlessly.
Attempted Issue Mitigation Steps
1) Unpair/Repair - unsuccessful
2) Rename phone in bluetooth settings - unsuccessful
3) Set phone as alternate phone in car (car accepts two phones at once) - unsuccessful
4) Enable/disable enhanced audio in phone bluetooth settings - unsuccessful
5) From within phone <settings/applications/manage applications/all/, clear Bluetooth Share and BluetoothDun cache - unsuccessful
6) Paired another phone with car (Blackberry 8330) which worked, then deleted pair and retried the Droid X - unsuccessful
7) Took car to dealer for system reset and car code upgrade. BMW engineers reviewed the computer logs and do not have any fixes available to resolve issue - unsuccessful
😎 Cried loudly and begged car to work with phone - unsuccessful but felt a bit better momentarily
9) Verizon technician said they would "look into opening a ticket with Motorola" but not to get my hopes up - unsuccessful
So ultimately I'm stuck with a phone I bought 4 months ago that was listed on my car manufacturers compatible list (www.bmwusa.com/bluetooth), and yes I know it only shows compatibility with version 2.1, but it was working when I took delivery of the car and stopped when the update came though. Now it doesn't work and I really rely on hand-free.
So... does anyone have any thoughts, ideas, rants, etc that could possibly help me get this fixed?
Would there be a possible supported method to revert back to 2.2 to test my theory?
I don't expect Verizon to jump in and help at this point, but it sure would be great if this post made it to an engineering upper tier group that could take a look at the code and let me know what changed in 2.2.1 from 2.2 as related to bluetooth functionality. I jumped ship from Appleland and would really prefer not to go back, but I know the iPhone will probably always work in my car because it's the giant out there right now.
Thank you for looking and thanks for any help that can be offered!

I have the same issue with my DROID X 2.3 connecting to my 2011 Honda Accord EXL with nav. I cannot import any of my contacts and I keep getting error occurred. In the past I haven't received any help from Verizon they always pass the buck, always.

I understand this issue would be frustrating. I can assist with turning on Bluetooth features of the device, but when it comes to more detailed Bluetooth transfer information, this is best handled by the manufacturer of the phone or the car. I apologize if this sounds like we are passing the buck, but Bluetooth is not connected to the wireless service of the phone. Here is a link to the Bluetooth car kit compatibility list.
