Having issues with new Droid X camera/camcorder.
Posted this on the Droid X Forum as well, but no luck:
I've searched for this issue a few times, but haven't found any responses. I apologize if this is something that has been discussed. I'm having an issue with the camera and camcorder (not sure if they are related). The first issue effects both the camera and camcorder. The camera will be working fine and then the screen is black. This happened once last week and after a bunch of attempts to fix I just went to bed. When I woke up in the morning for work, the camera worked. Some of the stuff I tried was turning off geotagging, disabling GPS, unmounting the SD card, pulling the battery, & restarting the phone. I also spent over an hour on the Motorola online support chat and they were utterly useless. Anyway, the camera has worked for about a week and now it has crashed again. I'm just wondering is there is a known fix for this (its not a hardware issue). The second issue has to do only with the camcorder. I can only record about 5 seconds of video before the application freezes. I think audio continues to record, but no video. Unfortunentl, I discovered this at my son's first Cub Scout weekend...video was worthless. Anyway, I would appreciate any help. Below is some info on my phone & carrier:
Carrier:
Verizon
System Version : 2.3.15.MB810.Verizon.en.US
Android Version : 2.2
If there is any other information that would be useful, let me know. Thanks.
Since then, I've deleted all my apps (and tried the camera) and performed a hard reset. Nothing worked so far. As of right now, I'm going to take the phone back to the store tonight. One more thing, I don't think the shutter is "stuck" because I can see the bluish/purplish lens in the camera. I'm convinced this is some kind of software issue. Thanks guys!

very strange .... sounds more like a hardware problem to me ... I agree that you should just have it swapped out at the store. (You'll probably get a refurb though.)
my only complaint about the camera is that frankly the quality of the images are not that great for an 8MB pixel camera ! At least comparing it to images that a friend takes on his iPhone ... but I really didn't buy the DROID X for a camera anyway; I have a pro DSLR already for serious pictures ... The Video camera is pretty decent however.

Wow, you think I'll get a refurb instead of a new phone? I could also send it back to Motorola. The only reason I don't think this is a hardware issue is because it happened last week and I did a bunch of battery pulls and stuff and in the morning the camera worked again! I agree, I didn't buy the phone for the camera, but unlike my DSLR I have it on my all the time and I expect something to work when I pay a couple hundred dollars for it....

It probably is a software issue. I would try a factory reset without having a backup. If you backup and put the backup back in, you're just putting the particular problem back in. So, try a factory reset and see if that helps any. If it doesn't, than it is a hardware failure. Good luck.

I initially thought it was a software issue, but I tried all of your suggestions. Unfortunately, none of them worked. I went to Verizon store tonight and had a new Droid X within 15 minutes. Pretty good service!

That is highly unusual. So, I guess it was hardware afterall. Good luck with the new Droid.

I am having same problem. Some of the things I tried are factory reset, hard reset, power off/on, format SD card and none of this worked. Finally, I went to verizon store and got new Droid X but same problem again. Now I am tired of the camera with droid x. So, I went to market and got FxCamera and it never crashes. At least I can use camera but not camcorder. Let me know if someone figured the camera/camcorder issue with droid x. I know for sure it's not hardware issue.

I hope you realize that the clarity that the iPhone has is more related to screen than the camera, because if you view the shots on your PC the photos do not look as clear as they appear on the unit. I have a co worker that sends me photos he took with the iPhone 4 and the images was nice but no where as clear as the screen makes them look.

I agree that this may be a software related issue... Try : http://community.vzw.com/t5/DROID-X-by-Motorola/Minimize-Droid-X-Issues-After-Froyo-Update/m-p/29658...

Could be the SD Card. My camera and video were working fine for about a year. Now everything is gone and Verizon is telling me the card is blank and will not format. Everything is lost. On top of that they tell me a new card is $70.00 but I see at Amazon that they have 16GB for $11.99. BTY the insurance I pay for apparently does not cover it. What the hell is it for then?
They did offer me a new phone if I use my credit for $200.00. My phone is only 1 year old. I just want it to work. Any suggestions? Why should i pay $70.00 for a new card if the old one did not work? Won't it just happen again. I am not a happy customer.
