Droid X Early Upgrade/Local Stock Disappointment

My beef with VZW is that they announce a special early upgrade for people who's CONTRACT ends in 2010.  That upgrade would be at most 6 weeks early (not the 4.5 months that was implied).

How do I come up with 6 weeks maximum:

  • 24 month contract minus 20 month NE2 upgrade = 4 months
  • Which would mean without the promotion someone whose contract expired 12/31 would be normally be eligible for a new phone on 8/31 (12/31 minus 4 months).
  • 8/31 minus 7/15 (Droid X launch day) = 6 weeks

I know they didn't say that it was for someone who is eligible for an upgrade in 2010 but it sure seemed to be implied that way with the announcement at the Droid X unveiling, and the multiple press releases that mentioned it.  Shame on VZW for this PR stunt.

In addition, VZW PR claimed there is plenty of stock to go around and that is not true after numerous blogs posted stocking levels at local stores.  My local VZW corporate store was out of stock within 2 hours of opening their doors.  I'm not driving all over town to find one of these on release day.  I know I can order online, but if I'm going to be buying a bleeding edge device for full price I want it in my hands immediately.

My contract expires 2/15/2011 which means my upgrade date is 10/15/2010.  My local corporate store both indicated the only way for me to get the Droid X is to pay full price or get it for $199 by adding an additional line.  Been looking forward to this day for weeks only to be disappointed on all fronts.

That it not rare. I have heard this happening to other customers as well. Even one user here on the forums was trying to upgrade early within 2 days on their due upgrade. Wouldn't let him/her.  You'll hopefully be a happy customer right when the 10th day hits. It's not that long off compared to a month

I am in a similar boat.  My wife and I are on a family plan, and I was eligible for an annual upgrade since my number is the primary line.  I have been waiting for the Droid X and my wife was wanting a Blackberry, so the customer service rep at the Verizon store told me my wife could use my annual upgrade for her Blackberry.  Prices were really good  ($29 after rebate) so we went with it.  The rep led me to believe that I would still be able to get the Droid X when it launches at the $199 price.

Well flash forward to to day the 15th of July.  I'm in the Verizon store talking to the rep and planning to upgrade.  I have the Droid X in my hand then they tell me I have to wait until 30 September.  That was fun.  I even tried calling the Verizon customer service and all they would say is they were sorry, but I can still buy the phone at full retail price.

I am definitely angry with Verizon at the moment.

I'm sorry but u really are the only one to blame. She was able to use YOUR upgrade for your wife. Why in the world would you think that for some reason you would be upgrade that same line. That is not very bright.

And your saying "even customer's with out the promo can upgrade 4months early" thats not true. They have to be on a qualifying price plan for 6 consecutive months prior to the upgrade date and they have to have a limited amount of past dues and no suspensions for non payment. So shame on you for not knowing what you are talking about. also why are you complaining abt a promo that you aren't even eligible for?!?! what a waste of time.

In spite of all the anger and frustration I'm sure many of the people who didn't get what they wanted today, myself included, will be purchasing a Droid X when we are eligible.

Frustrated here as well.......My contract end date is 8/29/10, was told by telesales that the upgrade was no problem, and specifically asked about a 1 year contract and was told that was also no problem and the price would go to $269 after rebate. Telesales mentioned to call your local corporate store and get your name on a list, so I did. Arrived at the store by 10:00 am as instructed only to find out that they would not allow a 1 year contract upgrade AND I offered to buy the phone at full retail price (I do not like 2 year contracts) and was told they were not allowed to sell the phone without a 2 yr agreement. Several calls to customer service (and a supervisor) were no help. I am a loyal Verizon customer for more than 12 years and I am not upset I didn't get the phone (really not that big of a deal), just frustrated they didn't honor what they told me. Upon my contract expiring I guess I will have to see what my options are.

It goes by your contract date not eligible upgrade date. So if contract end date is 12-31-2010 you are eligible. Anytime after that you are not.

No matter what is said, or what is written, there will always be people who interpret it how they want.  The press releases stated Contracts that END in 2010 will be able to take advantage of the offer on the 15th of July.  I could understand where someone would be confused, but once explained a rational mind would say:  Oh, ok I see, I misunderstood.

Also, as to the fella that let his wife use his upgrade... Seriously did you think you could use your upgrade, then use it again in a couple of months?   It's kinda like Toilet paper, once it's used you can't really use it again.
