Droid X Headaches

Where to begin, I have had this phone for almost a year now. The first software update that came out, we had to complete a factory reset to get the phone working again. Now, ringtones that are assigned to certain numbers the phone decides to use whatever ringtone whenever it wants to. Have to completely turn the phone off and remove the battery once a day. Touch screen has a mind of its own. The list goes on, lets just say of all the phones I have had, this is by far the worst phone I have ever had. I have insurance and was told I could exchange it, however I don't want another Droid X.

Is there any fix for this phone or is just a really poor phone?

By "first update", are you talking about Froyo in December? Both Froyo and Gingerbread (the update in May) caused issues with my X.

What I can offer is my experience. The factory reset must be done without restoring data. There are many threads on the best way to do a reset. Just use the search function.

I wiped my phone clear of all data, formatted the SD card and cleared the cache. You can do a search for each of those, too.

The main reason for issues after an update, in my experiences, has been app conflicts. After your reset, did you install the same apps you backed up, or did you install them "fresh" from the Market?

I know, it seems like a copout, but (in my opinion) one of the major flaws of Android right now is software conflicts, more specifically.......apps.

Try another reset, without installing any apps and see if that helps.

I mentioned using the search function because there are excellent step-by-step posts that can walk you through that and the other steps much better than I can by memory.

No, this is not a "poor phone" and I have been one of it's biggest critics from time to time.

This is probably the biggest difference between the Iphone and all the Droids. Where the Iphone is a closed system (they do not offer third party apps) the Droid is an open system much like Lexus is to PC operating systems. Third party apps can, and usually are, full of flaws (or worse). and two apps in conflict can really cause people grief with their Droids. Please do not get me wrong, I love both my DroidX and my Droid 2 (R2D2 version).

And something that a VZW rep wrote in another thread is disturbing, if true. Some apps can corrupt the O.S. and even if the app is un-installed, the "damage" can't be un-done unless the phone is re-flashed. I am talking over my head in all if that, but from my experience on this phone, apps cause 95% of the issues.

I can see that happening. It happens on PCs all the time with viruses, And, a smartphone is a miniature computer in a way, In fact, I use my Droid for work more than I use my laptop.

I didn't realize just how bad my X2 is until I used my friends HTC Inspire yesterday.  I used it for most of the day as an experiment.  All I can say is  WOW!  That phone rocked.  I don't even think that is a top of the line either.  It made my X2 feel like a dinosaur.  Really.  Everthing worked.  The camera took better pictures.  The audio and ringtones didn't skip and pop.  Overall
smoothness was leaps and bounds over the X2.  I'm now anticipating getting a different phone from a different manufacturer at the end of the month.  The only thing that would keep me with Moto is some kind of communitcation that there is
someone working on a fix for the most common issues we face as X2 owners.  I want to stay loyal, but its hard when they totally abandon a device as it appears that they have.

Hi adbice,

I understand your discontent; I would be frustrated if I experienced all the issues outlined in your post with my phone. As pointed out by the community, most issues with Android phones are caused by third party applications conflicts. While third party applications offer a great range of customization options, being an open environment also opens the door to incompatibility issues and conflicts with updated Operating Systems.

It is highly recommended to do a Factory Reset after an OS update to ensure compatibility with your current applications. Did you receive the latest Droid X OS Update released on September 21? If so, did you perform a Factory Reset after update? If not, you should receive it soon and this update may resolve the issues you are experiencing.

Please keep in mind that your phone includes a one year manufacture's warranty and we can process a Certified Like New Replacement if we are unable to resolve your phone's concerns after troubleshooting the phone with you, please visit this LINK for details.

3rd party apps are NOT always at fault - I have very limited apps on my phone and I still have problems (have since the joke of Moto's version of GB was put on my phone). I have the exact same apps on my phone today that I had on there prior to the GB update and never ONCE had problems with the phone locking up, rebooting, dropping continuously from 3G to 1X, etc, when it was running Froyo. My phone problems didn't start until VZW pushed GB to my phone...which I have done a factory reset on 3-4 times since and with each FR, one problem is resolved but another arises.

Sorry but I hate when people want to always blame apps. Can they cause issues because of open sourcing? Yeah, I won't deny that, but people should not automatically assume that if someone has a problem with their phone that it is because of a 3rd party app.

There are KNOWN problems with the Droid X after GB and VZW and Motorola seem to want to pass them off as not being serious, and these problems have absolutely NOTHING to do with any third party app interactions.

I would agree with you and say you are correct, if not for the fact that I haven't had a SINGLE problem after GB that removing an app did not solve.

I know it's hard to think that ONE little itty bitty app might be causing so many problems, but it's completely possible. It doesn't matter if you have "very limited apps" - it only takes one. If you've tried erasing all of them, for a good week I would say, and still have issues, then I will believe you.

I have, at most, 10 apps on my phone currently. I don't know about you, but I would consider that to be a limited amount (considering I've seen people say they have hundreds on theirs) - when I did have issues after GB, I had about 11 apps. That just goes to show you how one single app can ruin a phone. Mine was freezing, glitching when sliding between homescreens, messing up my wallpaper, the LED light wasn't working at all, my notification sounds were off, and half the time the slider on the lock screen would not unlock the phone. I had the Twitter app on my phone. I had added it just before GB was pushed out (I'll get to that in a minute) so I thought I'd give it a try and delete it. Within seconds my phone was back to normal working order. That ONE app caused ALL those issues on my phone.

You say you didn't have the issues before GB, and you have the same apps - GB is an entirely new software. Meaning, apps are going to interact and affect it differently than they do with Froyo. Just like a computer. Viruses affect different softwares differently, and some are made for a specific software.

Whether people want to believe it or not, with Android being an open system for apps (meaning, ANYONE can make an app - yep, ANYONE) many people are making harmful apps on purpose, to specifically affect certain phones and software versions.

I've had GB since it came out and the only change for the bad I've had is the rebooting when I power down my DX. A bothersome problem, but I can live with it. This has been my only problem. I do have a lot of apps on my phone. Banking, to help me keep track of my diabetes, Apps to help me read Windows Excel and Word. I can go on and on. However, before I download and install an apps, I read all the comments and I never download an apps unless it has at least 4 stars. I never download and install an apps because it sounds cool. These cool apps sometimes have a tendency of freezing your DX.
