Droid X Paranoia

Like most of you I had to wait about a week or two to receive my Droid X. In that sort amount of time I learned that the Droid X:

- Has screen issues

- Drops calls

- Lags

- Never stays on for 5 min

- Touchscreen is unresponsive

- Has no battery life

- Deletes everything

- Can take pictures better than a 5 year old phone

- A wannabe iPhone 4

- Isn't an iPhone 4

- An iPhone clone

- The worst phone ever

- Really a brick disguised as a phone

I learned all of this just by looking at various post about the phone. So when I got my phone I was paranoid out of my mind. From when I opened my box I felt something was wrong with it, from the straight from the warehouse smell to the length of the time it took to run its first boot.  I was sure I had a defective phone and was ready to march down to the nearest Verizon store and give them a piece of my mind. I even thought my phone was used. 5 min with playing with the phone the touchscreen froze up. The App drawer skipped a frame when going through it. I had 2 stuck pixels on when I brought up the camera. I only had 3 WiFi bars. 2 hours later at work I noticed my 3G signal turned into a 1x signal and a phone call I made wasn't so clear. The alarm I set failed to wake me up. My pictures were coming out the way I wanted. But I not been a rational person I probably would've raged.

The unresponsive touchscreen, thinking back I think it was an error on my part, regardless a simple battery pull solved it. The App drawer skip could've been caused by anything, probably me racing through everything when the phone was running through some of its paces and it was hardly noticeable compared to lag on my old iPhone. 2 days after I got my phone and I can't find those two stuck pixels, they only showed when I pulled up the camera anyway. My WiFI was actually slow, its just that the router is behind a couple of walls, a microwave, and several other factors that could cause the signal to deteriorate slightly. I actually only experienced the 3g anomaly within one spot at work, everywhere else the signal was far stronger than what I had with ATT.  The call that didn't sound so solid was me talking to someone that had MetroPCS, never had too much luck with their phones in my area. The alarm, I set it wrong, increasing volume isn't loud enough. The pictures, I was taking them in low light and didn't know how to use the auto focus yet. I've ran benchmark after benchmark, test after test, and so far there is nothing wrong with my phone, the battery can even survive the brunt of my constant fiddling with the homescreen.

Point is, before you go on the warpath with your new Droid X, take a second to see if you have a defective device or not. From what I've read, VZW is being pretty liberal with replacing phones. Most of the time you hear about CS nightmares with clearly defective products. Take every positive and negative feedback you see with a grain of salt less you will set unrealistic expectations about the device before its even in your hands. Take the time to learn the in and outs of the phone before you call up CS complaining about this or that when nothing is actually wrong with the phone. There are obviously some bad devices that feel through the cracks, but before you assume yours is one, relax and properly troubleshoot the device before you curse something you just spent $200+ on.

{please keep your posts courteous}.

However, after skimming through your post I will have to give you a kudos; what you said is exactly what these {please keep your posts courteous} on here should've been doing in the first place. I bet you $2000 that most of these problems are self inflicted cause none of these {please keep your posts courteous} even bothered to order the FREE manual from Motorola or view the pdf version so they can learn how to do everything.

No, they just rush on here and clog up the forum with useless rants. IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE PHONE GO TO ANOTHER CARRIER; DON'T TAKE UP SPACE WITH **bleep** RANTS.

I don't even have mine yet but I already have the manual, and I already read the pdf version back to front. I also made sure to visit other forums, especially the ones that deal with only the Droid X, so that I can learn a little bit of this and that before mine arrives.

I don't understant what the heck is so hard about READING and TAKING YOUR TIME before you even turn the phone on. You people are always in a rush and then YOU BREAK THE DEVICE and act like its faulty.

As for you guys who did get a faulty phone, just return it and get a new one. A working Droid is totally awesome.

+1, Pacoxi. Really good read. Looking forward to reading more from you.

But with writing skills like this, I REALLY hope, for Verizon's and Moto's sake, your phone doesn't stop working...:smileyhappy:)

Very true, people sometimes forget that these are far more than just phones and need to be though of more like a computer. The very next day after I recieved my X I went to the VZW store and asked for a quick tutorial, and you know what... it helped. I got my phone the day they came out and I still haven't d/l'ed the manual. I know I should but I haven't needed it yet. I will soon though because I know it's capable of doing more than I'm doing now.

Well it turns my phone was slightly defective but not rage worthy and I wouldve never noticed if it wasnt for a glitch. When I got it smelled like an electrical fire if you ever smelled on. I put it off as a new phone smell. I suspected the phone was eating a bit more battery power than it should, the screen was also wonky.

On day when showing off my phone the camcorder was very slow, playback and recording. I thought it was because there was little kids spazzing on the other side, Nbgiving the processor a hard time. I closed the camcorder to look at some picks and when I went back to record another video it force closed it self. It did this several times loading for half a second then crashing to home. There was a message that said camera is unavailable. After 2 phone reboots it functioned again. After that my pictures quality dropped and the phone began to run hotter.

I decided to use my return. The new X had no odor to it, battery last longer (more apps same battery) and it runs smooth as butter. It runs cooler also, even after my personal stress tests. I noticed on the first on the back speaker wasnt completly visible in the slot if angled the phone in the light. The cover on the primary mic also seemed loose. I could also see light leaking around the function keys. Had it not been for the camera mishap I wouldve neved known device was a runt perhaps. It worked fine except the slight flaws.

Now I love the X even more. I am worried I havent produced the camera glitch again though.

Piper posted where.

Here's why...Money. Or saving money, rather. Posting the manual online allows for "a greener approach to offering instruction manuals" (gee, I almost gagged just writing that).

The real reason is saving money from not having to supply a print manual. It also allows Verizon to package the Droid X in a REALLY small box. I mean, REALLY small. When I saw the box, I seriously asked the rep if the phone was actually in there. She laughed and said that was her first question, but yes, the phone is indeed in the box. My thought was "Gee, Verizon, don't open yer shirt or yer heart will fall out".

But powering up the phone, activating it, then using it made me forget the silly little box (then, I was thinking, gee, this thing doesn't ring very loud, now does it?....Oh ,well, maybe that will be solved under the subject of my next post, which is.......(stay tuned)

I always laugh when I read posts of people slamming a particular phone for one reason or another.  There's not a phone on the market by ANY manufacturer with ANY carrier that is perfect.  Whether it be the Iphone4 or the DroidX, they ALL have a bug or two whether it be in the hardware or the software.  The issue is to buy a phone that will suit YOUR particular needs/wants.  It's all just a matter of preference and people shouldn't expect everything to be perfect.  Life isn't perfect and neither is your phone, so the sooner people stop "sweatin the small stuff", the better off we'll all be.

When you consider all that these (this) phone does, compared to 10 years ago, and all of the software and apps from different sources, all combined on one phone; it is amazing that this piece of plastic in my hand exists.

I've spent $1200 on a camcorder and $500 on a digital comera in the past. These functions on my Droid X may not be of the quality that pleases some people, but they came with the phone for under $200.

The 3G service I get most of the time blows away the dial-up that we once had to use on pc's, for those old enough to remember that.

That said, maybe I am old. I think this Droid X is a truly outstanding work of technology. It's not perfect, but what electronic device is?

I disagree with everything you posted. You must have played with settings that you didn't understand. My DROID X is amazing.  :smileymad:
