Droid X Ringer/Vibrate Problem....

My Droid X only vibrates when calls come in now... Can't turn it to silent or have a normal ring... I have tried to manual adjust on the side of the phone, use the menu option to adjust the ringer, and the lock screen when you first initiate the phone... no luck!  Has anyone had a similar problem?  Please help... frustrated...

I would perform a hard reset. Performing a hard reset will remove ALL data including the Google account, system data, application data, application settings, and downloaded applications. To perform a hard reset follow the directions below:

  1. From the home screen click the applications tab
  2. Touch settings
  3. Touch privacy
  4. Touch Factory Data reset
  5. Touch reset phone (If presented, enter the current passcode or draw the unlock pattern.)
  6. Touch erase everything

Hope this helps! :smileyhappy:

Morgan,

This is a  ridiculous and typical (easy out for you) request. You cannot expect us to continue to hard reset our devices.

I have done this, it does solve the issue.

What solution can you >> guarantee << ?

I too am having this same problem with the ringer not working.  The problem began with the update from a couple of weeks ago.

With all due respect - how can performing a hard reset be a viable solution?

While a hard reset may fix the problem from Verizon's perspective - and if counting resolutions as most support centers tend to do is all that really matters - then this is an acceptable answer.  But from the customer perspective - this is the LAST thing one should do.  Where is the effort to try and figure out why things are the way they are and how to truly fix the problem so it can be corrected for future users?  THAT would be true customer service.  Especially when there are plenty of US who are happy to try and help fix the problem.

Let me also point out that this is equivalent to backing up just data files on a computer and not the rest of the environment and thinking that this is good enough.  When someone has to spend hours recreating and reconfiguring their personal environment to help them get their work done - then the backup/restore process has still failed.   It's the time lost as well as the data that matters.

So, PLEASE, can we find a better path to fixing the problem?  I am happy to assist in any way I can.  Verizon can see my account and call me.

Thanks for listening.

I couldn't agree any more. The droid X is undoubtadly the most impressive phone i have ever had. However, that was an accomplishment on Motorola's behalf, not verizon's. Therefore, verizon, do your part as a mobile carrier and find a solution that we can all deal with as your loyal customers. After all, isn't that where my monthly bill is going? I was not as fortunate as some and had to perform a hard reset on my X. I tried everything else, trust me. I just wish by walking into a verizon retailer that i could actually talk to someone intelligent enough to understand my level of frustration when my $300 investment isn't working properly...........

I fixed the problem on my Droid X and avoided the hard reset!

Motorola identified this problem as a bug with the "face down vibrate" feature. The instructions are at the link below:

My DroidX just started this problem today.  I tried the Motorola link but that did not work for me..... :smileysad:

Yesterday my Gmail started giving me issues and today it is the ringer.  I guess I will be stuck doing the hard reset which I did not really want to do.  :smileysad:

The work around at the link you provided worked for me.

  1. Make sure you phone has the upside down silent thing on

  2. Call your self with phone face up

  3. turn phone over then back to face up

  4. end call from call origination phone.

Easy!

Thanks,

k

Yes, I am having the same problem right now.  I can hear the tones when I receive an email or a text message.  But not when a call comes in.  I am trying to avoid doing a hard reset, but it looks like I might have to go that route!

It's a problem that allot of people are having it seems.  I had to perform a hard reset on my phone too.  I went as far as taking pictures of each of my customized home screens so I could remember what I had on each.

I think this problem has something to do with the smart sensor vibrate feature (the one where you can turn your phone face-down while it is ringing so it goes straight to vibrate)... For some reason it gets STUCK on vibrate for good!  I'd stay away from that feature for now until Verizon of Motorola fixes this problem.  It's a great feature to have IF IT WORKED!!

Good Luck!

I went to the Motorola link and tried calling my phone 5 times and it didn't work.  I then turned my phone completely off, turned it on again, and tried calling it two more times and it finally worked.   I would keep trying many times to avoid the factory reset.

I had to power mine off as well, and it worked on the 2nd time calling that time around! Sooo glad I don't have to do a hard reset!!!

I'm also having the same problem.....My original Droid X worked fine for about a week and then no ringtones, just vibrate.....Went round and round with tech support and they also suggested a factory reset...didn't wanna do it, but I did. It resolved the problem for about 6 hours then back to just vibrating again.

I was still within my 30 days, so I went to the Corporate store to get a new phone, but since they are in such high demand, they didn't have any and had to order me one.....It came a few days later, but they had sent me a "Factory Refurbished" one instead of new.....so back to the store where they tried to convince me that it was a new phone and not refurbished (even though it had an FRU SKU #).....Called Verizon and talked to tech support again and had a guy "Guarantee" that they would send a NEW phone out and it would be there by 10:30 am the next day.....4:00 pm and no phone.....call Verizon back and talk to tech support again and I'm told that the person I spoke to the night before should have never promised me a new phone the next day, but that it would be there the day after ....but I won't be home, have to be at work for a 24 hour period......asked to talk to a Supervisor as everyone was giving me a different story....The Supervisor tells me that since I won't be home to sign for the phone that it will probably get sent back, so what she will do is order ANOTHER phone and have it sent to my work place...She tells me that she will call me back in about an hour to confirm that the new phone is being shipped and to give me the order number/ tracking number etc.

An hour later, I get a phone call, but it's not the supervisor. It's another lady telling me that the Supervisor made a mistake and that they won't be able to send me a new phone the next day because they are on such back order and that one won't be shipped until at least August 26th.....I ask her what I'm supposed to do for a working phone in the mean time and she tells me that her Supervisor has authorized for me to use the Factory Refurbished phone until my new phone comes.....Long story short, I've used it for about a week and now it is having the same problem....no ringtone, just vibrate no matter what setting it's in.....Every one of the Tech support people I talked to, checked to see if they have been getting calls from others about this problem and all of them said they found nothing......Funny, I come on here and find all of you right away and find out that Motorola is aware of this problem and has a possible fix for it ( Thanks Gary_pgh!)

I tried the fix and it worked, but I think I'll just wait for the new phone to arrive and keep it and send the 2 others back for all of the hassle I went through....and I'm going to call Verizon and yell and scream that I want my 30 days started over as I never had a working phone the whole time.....

i've tried everything on the posts and to no avail. i tried the Motorola solution about 15 times without success. then shut the X down, removed  the battery and restarted the droid. i then tried the process described on the Motorola site and was finally able to get the phone to ring. don't give up before going to factory reset....you can get your ringer to work again!!!!

This was exactly how I fixed mine as well. I followed the link, tried at least 5 times was ready to do a reset when I saw your post. I turned my phone off tried 2 more times and the second time my ringtone worked. I turned that smart profile thing off and am keeping it off . Something can be said for turning the phone off and trying it two more times as it worked for you, me and another guy here on the forum. Thanks

Ok, i had the same problem, most of the same issues as the rest of you, but i happened across this:

https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/51541/~/droid-x---troubleshootin...

Tried it and it works like a charm.....in fact i recreated the steps 3 times

hope it helps someone.

And Morgan, shame on you. I found, tried, and verified this fix within 10 minutes of googling the issue. I'd think that if it were my job, i'd be able to do better than suggest a factory reset.

I had the same problem. I tried the motorola solution 20 times and finally gave up and did a hard reset. My rings work now and I'm keeping that smart setting off.

I got my Droid X in August and the vibrating ringer issue started a few weeks ago.  I thought my daughter might have done something while playing with the phone and had been trying every possible setting to fix it.  I even asked my techie cousins to look at the phone and try to fix it for me.  I finally went on Google and typed in "Droid X Ringer" and the third subject in the drop down box was Droid X Ringer Problem and I thought, "It's not me!" I tried the Motorola workaround at least 20 times when it finally worked.  I powered off the phone several times.  I took out the battery twice.  It finally worked!  The Smart Profile is off and staying off.

I had the same problem with my Droid X. Took it to Verizon Service Kiosk where I got it. Associate did hard reset after backing up my data. Booting up from power off took extremely long time(associate noticed that, too.) Associate arranged for replacement. No problems so far with replacement phone. No idea what caused the problem.
