Droid X and Mexico Vacation, WIFI vs. 3G & access charges?

So I'm traveling to Mexico soon. I called Verizon customer service to inquire about wifi vs 3G access while down there. They tell me that I will be charged per MB even if I am using the WIFI connection at my resort! Is his right? If I put the phone in Airplane mode and turn on WIFI, my impression is that the phone transmitter/receiver is disabled so  I would be communicating entirely through the resort WIFI yet Verizon says they will charge me per MB even though the data is not being routed through their network? Is this insane? Was the customer service rep I talked to in error? Has snyone else traveled outside the US recently and had experience with this situation?

Thanks in advnace,

He misinformed you.  You are 100% right. Verizon will not and cannot charge you anything for using wifi.

use wifi to your hearts content and enjoy your vacation.
