My phone will be delivered today... does anyone know if I need to go to Verizon to get it activated? I backed up all my pics and vids to my computer so i can just put them on my droid when it comes.. also, i've never had a data plan before, could that hinder this experience? Thanks guys.

It'll come with instructions but you should just be able to turn the phone on, follow the on screen prompts and get it activated. The data plan will automatically be added.

Activation is done through the phone. Instructions are in the box, and you should receive an email (at least I did) with the instructions. The data plan doesn't change anything in terms of activation

I activated my phone on 7/20. I too thought I would have to take a trip to the store to activate it. This is also my first time having a data plan. Activation was a breeze and instuctions are provided to activate over the phone, very easy. I ran the Backup Assit to synch my contacts with no problem. I am not too sure about transferrring media. I am glad I was able to do it all from home.
I hope this helps.

No, you aren't required to bring the phone to Verizon to activate it. There will most likely be some instructions in the box to help you with that. Although you can bring it to Verizon to have them activate it for you and also answer any questions you may have.
The user manual is in the phone but sometimes it helps to have a complete written copy to see when you're learning about your new phone. I've attached a pdf of the Droid X user manual that you can download into your computer and print out if you like.
Good luck with your new Droid X,
