Hello, I've noticed that the droid x heats up not too long after your start surfing the web. Is this a natural occurence? There is nothing mentioned in the pdf instructions about this. If this is supposed to happen, does it say how long one should be browsing. I would had to think that I am slowly frying the inside of the droid x, which does get hot.
Two, is there a better way to cut down on running apps? There is one thing that I see on the running services from the application settings. When I click on it, there are things that I close but for some reason they eventually come back on. It would be nice if they were eplained more thoroughly. Yes, I have tried the free task manager but it kept shutting down the phone. Thanks for the prompt response

I noticed my Droid heating up a little when I use the Navigation function on my car dock, but I also have it hooked up to power during that time. I just figured since I am using the 3g radio for navigation, and charging at the same time.
its not so hot it burns, but just warm to the touch.
I do not notice it when I am using the Market, or surfing around a little.

Advance Task Killer works perfectly, it has a auto feature that can close apps after a amount of time or when ever phone back light is turned off, I have been using it with the backlight option on and I dont have to look at my task manager that often because it takes care it well enough in my opinon.

Thanks for the reply guys. I have also noticed that when I use wi-fi ,the bottom of the droid x really gets warm as well. I guess that last question to ask everyone who has a droid x, is this. Is there anyone who can be online that does not have the bottom of the droid x warming up a lot?
Thanks for the prompt response

Are you streaming music from the internet, or playing music stored on your Droid X?
The heat doesnt cause the battery to drain faster...

Heat can definitely make a battery drain faster. Had an issue with my original droid overheating in the car mount. A roughly 2.5hr trip pretty much drained the battery completely. Same trip using a vent mount with cool air blowing on the back only used about 30%. Also seems that the 3G radio generates a good bit more heat than wifi (~10-15F). I use wifi whenever possible since it seems to run cooler and battery life improves a little.

But the battery is almost at the top of the phone, and the 3g radio is at the bottom of the phone..... I should have specified that in my earlier post..... The location of the batter and radio's wouldn't affect the battery that much.

The point is that the battery will heat up more too. Download the batterylife widget and watch the battery temp. Usually there's only about a 10C difference or so between the CPU temperature and the battery temp on mine.

Mine heats up when I was just playing stored music or using it for an extended period of time (apps & internet). Don't ever notice it while on a call. It seems to be the bottom of the phone between the speaker and the bottom of the battery cover. Not really where the actual battery is.

i noticed that if i turn off the GPS, then it doesnt heat up as much....otherwise, whenever i play music or using the browser it stays relatively normal...the culprit, in my opinion, is the GPS device....

I too have a concern about the Droid getting rather hot when it is in use. I just received two Droid X's and they both get really hot when they are in use even for calls. It is only the bottom half of the phone that gets hot. I am not sure if this is a defect in these two phones or not.
I read one of the previous posts about the GPS function causing the phone to heat up. I checked and I have all of the GPS options turned off.
I may stop by the local Verizon store this weekend and see what they tell me.

I went twice to two different verizonwireless stores and all they did was install taskkiller, which I uninstalled because it doesn't do anything that I can't already do. If browsing, it gets hot. If listening to music it gets hot. Anything that makes the processor work will make it heat up. Are there any vent hole, just the one is the back so where else can the heat disappate? Thats right, through the housing, which we feel when we hold it. You really want to get it going? Install bonsai blast and play that for about 15 minutes and it will heat up real good. Turn off backround data as well, not just GPS. Update your email and/or facebook manually as well. Droid x without office works just like a laptop and everyone knows it gets hot as well, which is why there are laptop coolers. As far as I am concerned, when 2.2 comes out maybe they can address these issues as well because I'm not the only one who feels heat when it is on for a while. Besides having the full insurance will guarantee me another one if the heat eventually damages the processor. Why chance it? Want to pay the full price for another droidx? It costs more than the insurance thats for sure. The math speaks for itself.

Now, I found something that explains things a bit from motorola:
Not that I would try to get it up to 136 F but at least there is a cool down mode function. Anyone dare to see if this really works?
DROID X - Gets hot during use or when charging the battery. Why does my phone get hot during use or when charging the battery?
It is possible phones will become warmer during heavy use. This is normal behavior especially if you are transmitting data, talking for an extended period of time, or playing games or music on the device. In these conditions, the phone is transmitting and utilizing alot of power on the device which will generate heat.
Motorola phones manufactured in 2009 or later have a "cool down mode" function. This feature is designed to protect the battery and circuit board. If the internal temperature of the phone exceeds 136 degrees Fahrenheit, the device will shutdown all functions except emergency calls. When this happens it will display a cool down mode message. Once overheated, a phone will not regain full functionality until the internal temperature drops below 136 degrees Fahrenheit. Ensure you are not leaving the phone in locked cars, in direct sunlight, on warm or hot items such as heaters or radiators, or any location that produces heat that will heat up the phone.
If your phone is getting hot while charging, you should immediately disconnect the charger from the wall and the phone. Please follow the steps below to troubleshoot the issue:
- Try plugging in another charger if one is available and see if the issue persist. If the charger is defective you can process you should discard immediately or process for a warranty return if still under warranty.
- Remove the battery door and battery from the device, inspect the battery and battery connections. Ensure there is no damaged to the battery, battery pins or contacts on the device. If you have damage to the battery or charging pins, please discontinue use and submit the phone for repair.
- Check to ensure the battery and charger are Motorola Original Equipment. While other 3rd party batteries and chargers may fit the device, they have not been certified and tested to Motorola's high standards and could damage your device.
- Inspect the phone to ensure there is no signs of liquid damaged that may have damaged the electronics in the phone. If there are signs of liquid damage please remove the battery from the device and seek a replacement unit from your authorized carrier. It is important to note that Liquid Damage is not coverred under the Motorola Limited Warranty and that phones that have experienced liquid damage will not be repaired and will be returned by unrepaired.
If you still experience issues with the unit getting hot. Remove the battery from the device and go to our repair troubleshooter to process the phone for repair."

I found that the culprit on my droid x for excessive heat and slow performance, and battery drain was my Facebook syncs; contacts and etc. I tried almost everything else to help with these problems but the dang phone still was hot and killing my battery. My battery would last less than a day; unplug at 6am. plug back in at 8pm. I have about 275 friends on Facebook and I believe the it took a lot of energy for the phone to stay up to date with those contacts. I also had gmail/calender and twitter synced. Once i 'unsynced' these applications my droid x's performance doubled. Seriously. My phone battery life last appx a day and half now even with normal usage; web browsing, music playing. If you can live without having to know every single notification coming in from these providers, by all means, go without. I also have Launcher Pro installed; runs like a dream!

And i dont recommend running any task killers like ATK. Yur phone is not designed to run that way. The Android system was designed to run itself. Any apps running that dont need to be running are closed automatically. Tasks killers are good for one thing; kill your phone. I do recommend something called Juice Defender. Its default setting turns all data syncing off when yur screen is off, and then resumes normal operation when you unlock yur screen. This is safe. Also try turning off your 'Background Data' with your phones own native OS. Go to Settings>Data Manager>Data Delivery> then uncheck Background Data. Then go to the bottom part of the screen to Social Applications. Check Sync over WIFI only. This should help with battery life and heat significantly.
