Droid X turns itself "ON" after Gingerbread update

Just did the Gingerbread update (.596) yesterday and all is fine so far. But last night I turned my phone off and this morning to my surprise my phone was on. Anybody have an idea what happened? My timer showed it being on for 11hrs which is roughly the time span from when I shut it down.

Just for info, I did press the power button at the top of the phone and then tapped turn phone "off" and had the above problem.

Wildely reported ..  (try SEARCH on this forum) ...    Personally, I haven't seen it yet ..  But MOTO is aware of it.

I tried search and only find issues with the X turning "Off" then back 'On"  Mine does not do this as I turn it off myself by it turnes itself back on. Can you point to some posts relating to this?

Any word on when MOTO will fix this issue? Do you by any chance have any link on a response to this issue from MOTO?

This is an absolute joke. I can live with small bugs but this is major if you ask me. Neither a battery pull or factory reset does anything to solve this issue. I am not a happy camper.

Read the other multiple posts on this here on this forum. Usually, if you turn it off again after it's turned itself on, it will stay off. Atleast that is the concensus on this forum.

Edit: I thought I'd test this on mine to see if this issue occurs, and it does not. Turned my phone off about an hour ago, and low and behold, it's still off! The ONLY issue I experienced out of the MANY that were widely reported, was the LED notification not working. All I did was clear the cache of my texting and email apps, and it brought it back to functioning properly. I really have no idea why certain phones are experiencing so many problems, while others are not.

This was reported over on the MOTO forum but they have provided no "official" response to it. But they READ the posts on that forum.  So the short answer is I have no idea when/if it will actually be fixed.

At least it turns ON and not  OFF ... but I digress.

I hope there will be a fix as I don't want to live with this for much longer. I also wonder why some have this issue while others don't?

I think that's the issue - not everyone is having the problem.  Have you tried the CLEAR CACHE routine ? Others have reported that the problem went away after doing so.

That's the one thing I have not tried. Do I need to go into each application and clear it. Or is there a way to do everything at once?

Wiping cache partition -  cures many ills and is better to start with this than a (gulp) full Factory Reset.

  • Power off
  • Power On Holding Home Key
  • When Andy with Exlamation Point Shows up Press BOTH Volume keys
  • Use Volume Keys to navigate to "wipe cache partition" and tap power button to select
  • Wait for it to finish and select reboot system

Just performed the process and will see if it resolves it. Thank you.

Don't believe this will fix the issue as others have done this process only to have it return. This is really screwed up to say the least.

Well, I can tell you that clearing the cache will not solve the problem; neither will pulling the battery or anything else I've tried. Guess I'll just have to live with a double power off until Motorola figures it out.

To the both of you having issues:

Have either of you tried turning the phone off AGAIN after it turns back on???? Many have reported that their phone stays off the second time.

I couldn't tell if I have this problem or not as I never turn my phone off.

I cancelled my land line many many years ago as my wife and I both have cell phones so why pay twice.  Anyway, we both leave our phones on 24hrs a day because what if family members or friends need to get in touch with us in the middle of the night?

I have a Droid 2 and I'm experiencing the same trouble. This is quite annoying. I've been searching the web for an answer but haven't found one yet. I hope Motorola figures out how to fix this bug soon...

Add me to the list of unhappy customers with this Droid X issue- mine has been behaving badly ever since the GB update. Took it in one time to the local Verizon store, the manager said that doing a factory reboot would solve the issue- it didn't. Talked to a different manager a week or so later, she got me a replacement phone (received yesterday) and said that would fix it. Guess what? It didn't. The phone turned itself back on the very first time I shut it off to test it.

To those that think this isn't important, I work in the transportation industry and we have federal laws against having our cell phones on while at work- if they find my phone on I could be subject to hefty personal fines and termination of employment. Setting to airplane mode will keep it from "talking" with a tower should it turn back on, but does NOT solve the problem of being tested in the field by a manger or federal inspector. If my phone is on AT ALL I could be in very deep trouble.

Aside from that, the device has an "off" button...why doesn't it do what it is supposed to do? If my truck didn't shut off (and stay off) when I turned the key, wouldn't that be a problem as well?

So tomorrow I am going to roll on over to the Verizon store (again) and talk to the manager (again) and ask what they are going to do about this known issue (again) seeing as how a replacement phone has not solved the issue.

I had been 100% happy with Verizon since dumping that other company that starts with "S" and ends in "T" (yea they smell like that too) but I have to say this has been a major issue for me, and I don't seem to be finding a light at the end of the tunnel.
