Email synch via wifi

I live in a fringe area so my cell signal is not the best. 

Should the phone use wifi for things such as email synch, browsing, downloading apps and other connections, or is this strictly accomplished with the 3G?

If it should use the wifi, how do I check to make sure it is really happening?

There really isn't anything you need to do. If your phone is on WIFI the data icon will disappear from the status bar, and it will use WIFI.

That's really about it.
