Encryption error - "not enough memory"

I just updated my D2G to 2.2.3 and I'm loving it so far, but get the following error when I try to test ActiveSync on Exchange 2010 at my work after agreeing to enable device encryption:
"There is not enough memory to encrypt device data. Please remove old or unused application data to free up some memory and try again"
When I go to Settings > Applications > Storage Use, I have 5.8GB free in my internal storage and 2.5GB free on my SD card. Is there a way around this error on the phone or is this a setting on the MS Exchange server?
The encryption feature is specifically what I'm trying to test since I work at a health care company which requires data encryption for all mobile devices that access the network.
By the way I have never rooted the phone and was running stock 2.2 before upgrading.
Thanks for any help.

You may need to clear the data on your email app. menu>settings>applications>manage applications, select the all tab at the top, scroll to email, select clear cache, clear data. You will have to re-setup your email accounts, but that should get rid of any old exchange data. Maybe also try menu>settings>accounts & sync, select the active exchange account, press the remove account button at the bottom.

Just tried but still get the encryption error. The email app only had 36KB of data and nothing in cache. I've never setup another email account so maybe that is why so little data is there.

I can confirm this error appears even after I've deleted my corporate sync account and just tried to manually enable device data encryption.
