Error message: Wi-Fi unable to scan for networks

I received a replace for my DINC today, due to a screen issue.  I have been able to get everything set back up, except my wife at home.  When I received my original phone, I had it set up in a few seconds, this phone keeps giving me a message that it is "unable to scan for networks".  I do have a secure network however that was not a problem with my first phone.  Any idea what the issue is?  I know I always have the 3G but when I am home, I have always used my wifi.

Try to perform a soft reset on your device then set up the WiFi manually. To perform a soft reset remove the battery from the device while it's powered on. Wait about 30 seconds then re-insert the battery and power up your device. Follow the steps below to set up WiFi.

  1. From the home screen, touch the applications tab (located in the lower-left).
  2. Touch Settings.
  3. Touch Wireless & networks.
  4. Touch WiFi settings.
  5. Ensure WiFi is enabled.
Note WiFi is enabled if a green check mark is present.
  6. Touch Add WiFi network.
  7. Enter the Network SSID.
  8. Touch the Security drop-down.
  9. Touch the desired Security option.
    Note Supported security: WEP64, WEP128, WPA-PSK, WPA2-PSK, 802.1x Enterprise (certificate required)
  10. Enter the password or hex key then touch Save.

Soft reset didn't work...had to do a hard reset of the phone, problem is now fixed.

I am having the same Issue. After reading this, I did a factory reset and it STILL doesnt work! Any Suggestions?

(Unable to scan for wireless networks, unable to save network when I attempt to enter it manually, wifi turns off after a matter of moments every time i turn it on.)

My issue with the Wi-Fi not wanting to connect came after i had done the FR an it's been about week an a hafe since the Fr but when i did the soft reset it regained the ability to connect but it makes me wonder if this a one time thing or it will spring it self again. In the near future.!!!  :smileyhappy:  B33

*** BEFORE YOU DO A FACTORY RESET ***

Check your battery level and make sure that under "Settings"/"Power"/"Power Saver"/"Power Saver Settings"

the "Disable WiFi" box is unchecked.

That turned out to be why my HTC Thunderbolt was getting the "unable to scan networks" message.

The phone was turning WiFi off to save battery power, but wasn't "telling" me that is what it was doing.

None of the above are the correct answer, the problem still persists.  I've rebooted, pulled the battery multiple times, rooted, flashed several ROMS, unrooted, flashed stock ROM, no help at all.

Sometimes I can get WiFi on by massaging the back cover but it's only temporary.  If I put the phone in it's holster I'll lose WiFi again when I take it out and sometimes I'll lose it just picking the phone up for a table.

NOTE: I'm NOT a novice at this and I'm pretty sure my T'bolt is broken but it's out of warranty. <sigh>

Sounds like a wifi hardware issue that no amount of rooting, booting or flashing will fix...

I think you're correct, I'm convinced that I need a new phone but I'm unable to afford one at this time.  I'll probably have to switch over to my BlackBerry but the smaller screen is difficult for me to read.... <sigh>.
