FINALLY, I did the manual update to Gingerbread 2.3.6 - It went great!

My battery was charged to 98%.  I did NOT have the phone plugged into the charger.  To do this your Charge phone MUST be running STOCK on Froyo 2.2.1  EE4.

I went here and downloaded this file to my PC:  update_EE4B_to_EP4D.zip      The file size was 117,613 KB in my PC but after it was copied into the root folder of my phone the file size was 114.9 MB.

Next, in my PC, I changed the name of the file to:  update.zip

Then using the USB cable I copied the file update.zip from my PC to my phones SD Card root file.  That's where all my other stuff is stored.  After you copy it there you should go to the APP My Files to confirm that it is there.  The file size is now 114.9 MB.

Next  I pressed three buttons at the same time (this was tricky and a bit difficult).  I probably tried  8-10 times before it worked.  What it was doing is turning off the phone but I kept trying.  The three keys are:  Home Button, Power Button, and the Volume Up Button.

FINALLY, in my case the screen that came up was a RECOVERY screen.  It said recovery at the top.  You will see a choice of about five things you can do.  On that list of choices I touched UPDATE.ZIP and then I pressed the HOME Button at the bottom of the phone.   The update started and the screen that came up had an picture of an open box with an arrow coming out going down toward a Droid.  Now we know there is a little Droid doing the download!  There also was a BAR showing the progress which was slow at times.

It took all of 15 minutes and then the phone rebooted itself and finally just turned off.  The little Droid was probably exhausted!  I waited a couple more minutes after the screen went blank (black) and then pressed the power button.. The phone started and it's working very well on Gingerbread 2.3.6.

I got the courage to do this myself, its about 25% done I hope all goes well. In order to get the official update OTA will I have to do anything??

This is supposed to be the OFFICIAL one.

If my phone says that there is an update available I plan on refusing it.

A few folks at XDA developers said that it was the official VZ version for UNrooted phones running on stock Froyo 2.2.1  EE4.. 

By the way, if you used my set of instructions, were they easy to follow?

I got my update Over The Air this morning and it has the same SPECS as shown above.

Yep. It did this yesterday and all went well.  I'm looking forward to hearing other's impressions on whether their radio issues were resolved. Frankly, I'm not impressed. I've found the wifi to still be lousy and have had weird issues when my phone is locked on 3G.

will I get the OTA update knowing that I did the SD Card update? or doI have to revert? I will feel more comfortable withe the OTA update, and yes your directions were very simple to follow rather than messing with odin and all this other

Considering the stock EE4 to EP4 update is done manually, having it offered to you OTA would serve no purpose other than to cause problems.  Right?

Consider a team of electricians sent out to fix all of the Model X air conditioners installed for the past 6 months.  The electricians work from a fixed set of plans that instruct them to exchange the wires between terminals A and B -- that's all they need to do to enable the proper function of a safety feature that was incorrectly assembled during manufacturing.  If you received a copy of the plans before one of the electricians arrives and made the change yourself, do you want the electrician doing anything?  IF the instructions first say check that the wire on terminal A is red and on B is blue, then maybe he looks, sees it isn't because you already changed it, and leaves.  MAYBE he calls the main office to check if your system was already visited for the fix.  You might be up a creek if he reverses them back without paying attention to wire colors.

Why go there if you are more comfortable with the electrician making the proper correction?

Several folks that I know and are much more knowledgeable than I with regard to phone updates prefer the MANUAL update because it eliminates many other possibilities where the OTA update can fail be corrupted. 

That's why I did it this way but everyone has to make their own choice.
