I did the manual update too.

It went flawlessly.

Thanks for the instructions.

I'm sorry to say I was too impatient to wait for the OTA.

tstover,

It looks to me like it could not find the file UPDATE.ZIP.  You said you put update.zip in your SD "external file."  Update.zip should NOT be in any FILE.  It should be in the ROOT directory.

By this I mean when you connect your phone to your PC using the USB cable drag update.zip to whatever the phone's disk is named.  On my PC when I connect the phone via the PC cable it shows up as "Removable Disk (G)" and there are lots of other FOLDERS in my Removable Disk G.

Drag the update.zip file over to the whatever your phones disk is named.  That way when you go down through those folders that are on the phone's disk you will see a FILE called update.zip near the bottom of the list

Also, was the file you now call update.zip originally called update_EE4B_to_EP4D.zip?

You have not hurt anything because it did not start.  JUst get the update.zip in the correct place.

On my phone I am trying to figure this out because it could be a problem.

When I go to settings>about phone>status and look at battery status it shows the word Discharging whenever the phone is NOT connected to the charger.  When we had Froyo 2.2.1 it said Not Charging when it was NOT connected to the charger.

This is ONLY for all you folks that have Gingerbread 2.3.6 installed.  Does yours say Discharging when the phone is not connected to the charger???  I ask because it could be a problem but I suspect that this is just the way they said it and there is NO massive discharging.

Technically your battery is discharging when not plugged into a charger.

Yes mine says discharging now with the update.

The SD update and the OTA are the exact same thing. You will not be notified of the OTA because it will detect you have it on the check. I updated manually via Samsung to the EE2 and ee4 durign early use of the phone, in which case it did not reoffer ee2 but did offer me EE4 later. I prefered to do a sd install, which stopped the EE4 notification.

It will notify you of any newer ones in the future. Just don't root your phone if you plan for future updates.

People have been getting OTA's. My fathers phone cued for it but he didnt have time to do it becuase of work. So he's declined it twice.

Hopefully that puts someone else in the cue.

I double compared a friends OTA to the SD install and they are the same coding. Samsung must have released the SD isntall when they released the Source code to specific groups incluidign bug testers. Which then was placed on mirror sites. THis can help make it easier for everyoen to get it, and those doing OTA's not to congest things.

Oh and yes, discharging is what it says now when not charging. THat is a 2.3.3 and later thing.

On the file name. They always name it by the full update desciption.

Samsungs file name was originally like  SmsngI510_VerizonLTE_EE4B_to_EP4D_update.zip

Distributors renamed it to make it shorter so it's not a hudge run on file name.

You then rename it to update.zip so the system recovery tool see the file it looks for to update. Incase people have update.zip already and accidently move the wrong one.

ok i'm doing manual update and crossing all my fingers and toes that everything goes well.  the progress bar is hanging out at about 50%, but it hasn't been 10 mins yet, so i'm figuring that's normal.... (i hope i hope i hope)

i live in san francisco and still haven't seen OTA.  After two days of checking my phone for updates every 5 minutes I figured I'd just do the manual install and save myself the agony of waiting. Thanks to everyone on this forum for all the info and updates.

UPDATE:  It worked great!!! Thank you!!  {edited to comply with Terms of Service}
