Fed up with issues I'm experiencing on my Droid X

I'm on my second Droid X and 2nd micro SD card, and still having consistant issues with my phone. I don't know who to blame Motorola or Google, but I'm leaning towards Google as these problems just seemed to develop overnight about 4 mos ago. I experience power cycling several times a day, typically when listening to music, but also when listening to Stitcher, Pandora, or opening/responding to a new text message. I was given a refurbed phone after their efforts to resolve the issue didn't work. When the issues continued after I got the new phone I was given a new SD card as the one I had wasn't being recognized when I would connect it to my pc using my data cable. Their thoughts were that I had a bad file on my SD card. The issues are still happening with the new SD card and I've done approximately 7 system restores between the original phone and my current phone. I've been told to try using the phone in safe mode, but when I did that I didn't receive any messages that day which wasn't something I could deal with. I also couldn't use the applications I was using when the issue had been occuring. I'm to the point where I just want to say screw it and get an iPhone.
In addition to the power cycling I also experience general lag when using the phone (dialing a number, opening an app, typing into the browser, swiping from screen to screen) & my picture gallery not opening sometimes. I LOVED my Droid when I first got it and I'm heartbroken that I'm having so many problems with it. Is anyone else experiencing issues with theirs?

Is not apps. Is the recent upgrade from FROYO to GINGERBREAD Software. Some phones like mine worked fine and some, like my wife, they turn off aroun 3 to 6 times a day or more. Phone freezes, slow, camera dont work, USB errors, etc. They send a different upgrade to my wife from customer support to her text and still was doing the same, like send 1 text and u receive like 3 or 4. So, no, is not app issues and verizon knows it.

My wife friend found a way to restore back to Froyo and her phone is working great and the same way she had it before the update. My only complain with mine is that before u can click on the photo gallery while in cam mode and slide or see all the photos and now with update you can only see ur last picture taken. They did this software update for the people that rooted their phones and were using it to tether their laptops, psp, etc without having to make a contract and pay extra for a little hotspot box to tether up to 5 devices at one. If u pay for unlimited data they should let you tether if ur phone has that feature. They dont get that no matter what update in securities, they will always find a way to pass thru the securities and we are the ones paying for updates like this one...

I agree. It certainly does sound apps connected. I would delete the very last apps I installed and see what happens. A lot of these apps are very buggy and can mess up your SD card where it becomes non-functional. If this just now started to happen, as I said, delete the very last apps you installed and see what happens. Unfortunately, you might have to reformat your SD card because it might still have a bad file..

It does sound like an app. It might be one you downloaded about the time the issues started, or one that received an update, especially since you said the issues just developed suddenly. I had an udpate from Audible that had my phone doing all kinds of creative things. I uninstalled the app, but then decided i really like that app, so I'd just deal with the goofy stuff. I reinstalled the app and haven't had any more issues. I don't know if there was another update that came out in the mean time, or if uninstalling it and reinstalling it cleared some glitch. I know you did a factory reset which in theory should have cleared the glitches, but it's been my experience that it doesn't usually work. Did you have the Automatic Restore on or off? What about data backup?
Also there have been a lot of posts lately about SD card failures. You might want to connect with some of those people and see if you have some apps in common. Try to narrow down things a little.
Don't give up on your phone yet though. There are so many little things that might help. I really hope you get things straightened out. I know it is incredibly frustrating when your phone suddenly screws up with no apparent explanation.

Hi All,
Thanks for your suggestions, but I know it's not an app nor is it my SD card. I have received a new SD card and after receiving it did a factory reset and it still happened while using the factory provided music player. I'm on my third phone and it happened after I got that one too with no apps having been downloaded. I used the Amazon Cloud Player to play some music and in less than 2 mins of playing my first song it happened. There are several ppl talking about this issue on the internet and not one single Verizon person has acknowledged that this is a known issue.
I'm convinced it's a software issue with the Android OS as these issues started happening around the Gingerbread OS rollout on my phone. I'm left to decide do I go to a new phone with a different OS (i.e. the iPhone which I'm not a big fan of), try a new phone w/ the same OS but a different brand of phone, or wait and pray that the next update that Google does will fix this issue. I've been told by Verizon that there is a known issue with the phone booting up on its own, which mine also does, and that will be fixed in the next update. I'm hoping that the update will happen soon and that it will also address the issues I'm having.
Let me know your thoughts!

Sorry I forgot to address one of the questions you asked. For the factory reset I've done the one where you go through the settings, privacy, factory reset. And then my friend who's in IT did the hard reset from a DOS menu of sorts that you access as you're turning your phone on. It was a "wipe data" and "wipe cache". This didn't help either. Also, after he did that I wasn't allowed to basically do ANYTHING to my phone that wasn't necessary to get it up and running. I literally only updated the Amazon app so I could use its cloud drive, and set up my google account so I could retrieve my contacts. That was all that was done to the phone after the hard reset.
I AM going to Verizon today to get a new battery as currently that's the ONLY thing that hasn't been replaced yet since my original phone was received. We'll see what happens, but I'm skeptical that it's the answer.

Hello cdgo77,
I am more than happy to assist you with your device power cycling. In order to get a better understanding of the issue, I have some questions about the situation. May I Is there any liquid or physical damage on the device? Also, what software version are you running on the device? (Android version, baseband version, & system version) In your latest posting you states that you did a factory reset on the device. Did you noticed a difference in the phone's performance since the reset was done? If there hasn't been any improvements to the device performance then you can send me a private message advising what differences that you have or have not noticed. Also, please include your full name and mobile number so I can research additional options for you.
Thank you...

I was doing nothing, but composing a message in GMail.
Which brings up another point. The touchscreen display on this phone is NOT as responsive as it once was. One, two, sometimes three taps to get a response.
The horizontal/vertical screen rotation is slower and sometimes takes a couple of seconds.
Yeah, it's an old phone. Yeah, I know the routine, do a reset.....etc.
Just putting my footnotes on what has been a buggy glitchy phone for the 16 months I've had it.

I assume you tested it in SAFE MODE? just to rule out a rogue APP ?? I had a similar experience a few months ago - started experiencing a major lag when swiping between menus & screens. It was an APP that was over-taking my CPU.

Browser open, reading a website. Scrolling up or down becomes laggy, slow response.
Then, display goes dark, browser closes and returns to homescreen, BUT my wallpaper is gone. It defaulted to the stock wallpaper.
What?
As far as apps causing problems, no doubt, they do. No doubt, something the OP should check into.
But, when no new apps have been installed, it's a stretch for me to to think that a rogue app decided to come after my phone today.
At this point, I realize I am posting only for the purpose of venting.
This phone, more specifically it's software, is, has been, and obviously always will be DEPLORABLE.

h2oskiman, congratulations on your success. But, this opens a big can of worms. I sit on the side of those that think that apps create most of the conflicts and bugs.
HOWEVER, what does it say about the software on a device that one app could (supposedly) do what this one did to yours?
What does this say to the open, unregulated market that allows such apps?
True, testing and approving apps is logistically impossible for the OEMs. But something has to be done.
Toorbo, I personally witnessed apps that ran fine on Froyo crash on GB. That goes back to the need for an app testing system.
Contradicting myself, the software on this phone, past and present has always been buggy, regardless of apps. Blame cannot be put on apps when the stock UI, camera, display, etc. have issues.
So yes, apps do cause issues without a doubt. But combine questionable apps with buggy software and you get this phone.

Exactly - I feel your pain. I've had this phone completely factory reset without ANY apps installed other than what VZW forces upon us and the problems are there, which to me indicates that the problem is NOT with any apps you put on the phone yourself. It says to me that Moto and Verizon have a user interface on the DX that is not stable, atleast not as stable as it was when Froyo was on the phones. The GB update that Moto kicked out is so buggy that they've probably given up and resigned to having users just deal with it until they get frustrated enough to kick more money to Verizon for a different phone.
Atleast now VZW is giving me the opportunity to do an upgrade at the discounted cost. I have started thinking of going back to an iPhone just cause i have already used one, it was stable for me in the past, but what keeps me from doing that is that I do like Android alot better being that it lets me do more things than what Apple will limit me to because of the Steve Jobs mantra. Guess I'm just torn and will have to make up my mind, but atleast the discounted upgrade is atleast there for me now, so I have an option.
