I just activated my Incredible. I have one tone on there I want to set for notification for messages but can't figure out how to do it. I have another one I want to put on my phone for a ringtone but it got removed when I sent it as a message from my e mail to the phone. So I guess I'm trying to figure out where I go to access the sd card, which is where the first one is, how to get that in the list for notifications and how to add the other tone when my phone is connected to my computer since that seems like the only way I'll be able to add it. That's how I had to do it on the Fascinate.
edit. Figured out how to get the one ringtone from my computer to the phone. Now I just need to figure out how to set the one for my messages.

On the sd card, there should be a folder called media. In that folder create the following folders so they have this path.
Sdcard\media\audio\ringtones
Sdcard\media\audio\notifications
Sdcard\media\audio\alarms
Copy and paste the audio files you want for the different tones in the appropriate folder you want for each tone. When finished, properly disconnect the phone from the computer. The phone will remount the sd card. Then when you go into your ringtone or notification selection, all the tones in those folders will be listed with the stock tones.
Hope this helps.

A really nice and knowledgable greeter at my "local" VZW store told me about a free app from the market called ringdroid. It cuts up songs to make ringtones and it has the ability to add a tone to the notifications list.
I'll check out the method you gave me too.
