Gingerbread Software Update Problems

I am currently overseas with my Incredible 2 and I'm trying to download the gingerbread update via wifi on roaming. When I go into the settings menu and the software update submenu, I see the check now button, but it's blacked out making it unclickable. My phone isn't rooted or anything, but I do have my SIM slot unlocked through Verizon so that I can use a local SIM when I'm out of the country.
Just trying to figure out how I could get the Gingerbread update. If anyone has the same problems and found a way to fix it, please help me out.

The gingerbread update can only be downloaded from the 3G network.
The SIM card is the subscriber module that allows a global ready phone like the Dinc2 to work on overseas GSM networks.
The SIM card doesn't affect the phone from connecting to any available wifi hotspot.
According to the Verizon Software Update Instructions it can be downloaded via Wifi while roaming (scroll to the bottom).

Of course, this could be incorrect information as well. I wouldn't put it past Verizon...

Not sure, but you might have to wait until you are back in the US and on Verizon's network before you can download the update.
There might be a manual method released soon by one of the android websites, but that often entails a factory reset and you would need to reactive the phone on Verizon's network. Reactivation of course is quite impossible outside of the US.

I updated my Incredible 2 using WiFi last night. According to the attached link you are going about updating correctly. I don't know why it would be blanked out.

The OP is currently out of the country and has the phone's SIM card unlocked possibly using a foreign SIM card instead of the pre-installed one. Both are possible reasons why they can't download the Gingerbread update. Verizon would want the phone on their native cellular network in the USA to download the update.

Point is you should be able to download via WiFi. Explain to me what the SIM does to WiFi capabilities.

Quoted from the device manual.
"Updating the phone software
From time to time, software updates for your phone may be available. Your phone can check and then notify you if there’s a new update. You can then download and install the software update using your phone’s Wi-Fi or data connection."

I tried Wi-Fi and IT (the update) shut it down and used 3G!!
I had no trouble downloading even with "no bars" of service.
Ohh and the update did NOT fix the issue with the signal strength or the bars!!
