Is GB the end of the line for software upgrades on the Droid X?

Who knows, but you'll probably have another device by the time Google releases the next version, Motorola tweaks that version, and Verizon ultimately has to approve of it.

Since a number of Dual Core devices are going to drop into the market, I would believe development will lean towards optimizing OS for these device so if I had to guarss I would say GB will be the last OS update to officially be released for the device.....   Also since the Droid X has been listed as coming to the end of its life for support this make this seem even more true that this is the end...

Motorola typically supports a device for about a year, so as the 1 year mark is less than 2 months from now I'm going to confidently say yes, GB will be the last official update.

This will most likely be the last major OS upgrade for the X (Ice Cream Sandwich hasn't been released, and was only recently officially announced) but there will probably still be some maintenance releases to fix any bugs that may pop up.  Also, the GB update that is rolling out is only 2.3.3, so I would imagine that it will be bumped up to at least 2.3.4, as there is a security fix in that version.

Unofficial updates dont count because it isnt something Verizon will support, you may find updates from other sources but that isnt covered by Verizon and is against TOS policies so I doubt you will get much info on that in this forum...

I know but most will be on another phone or close to it when the next os comes out im just saying for people the keep multiple phones or just want to keep truckin with the x there will be a way to keep that spark alive lol I haven't tampered with mine but I think once I upgrade ill give in to curiosity and see how customizable it really is im just not brave enough to tamper while its still my everyday device.

With the number of Droid X's that have sold and the untapped potential of the device, the "custom" sector will have quite an audience, you can expect unofficial work to continue for years.

Other builds aren't supported by Verizon, but what's sad, is that you can get more support for your phone through other sources than you can through Verizon. I've had more help through forums than Verizon could ever give me. I'm seriously very frustrated and disgusted with this entire update process. Gina, the VZW employee who told us that the OTA would start on the 27th lied to us. It's not starting until the 1st. Motorola did a very small soak test ont the 27th, but it wasn't the official OTA. . When my contract is up, I'm cancelling my service and going to AT&T and getting an iphone 6, because by the time I'm out of contract, the 6 will be out. I'm done with Verizon...

LOL, enjoy your Iphone... Those are definately not locked down at all.... And AT&T has the best support service ever.....

Gina didn't lie, Motorola did in fact begin a limited official OTA release on the 27th.  Don't get upset just because it did not meet your expectations.

Go spend some time in the iphone forum. The Apple forum, not the forum here in the Verizon community. No phone is perfect. Choose iOS or Android based on functionality, personal preference, etc. and you will make the right move for you. Switching to iOS thinking are getting a perfect device that will never have any issues and you will probably wind up in that forum posting comments of similar derision. I've been with Verizon over 10 years in one form, or another. Not going to defend them or slam them. The update process is really something you should slam Moto for, not Verizon.

I was a AT&T customer for over 15 years and I never saw the quality support or service people claim they get with them.  During my time with AT&T I traveled all over the Country and I always had coverage issues wherever I went.  I had thought those issues to be the norm, when my job first offered VZW phones I gave them a try and was astonished with the difference in service and support.   I did a lot of driving and it felt like a whole new technology when I was able to go a whole day and weeks without dropped calls.

A recurring theme is friends who switched to Verizon out of frustration with coverage issues. Not important how friendly or tech savvy a carrier's CS is if you are constantly having issues with dropped calls.

Crb79... I know you hate when I say this but due to the locked bootloader the x will never realize its potential. Many rom and theme developers have already moved onto other devices. The original droid is enjoying more customizations than the x because we both know its an unlocked device. As always its just my opinion.

Actually the locked bootloader just creates an obstacle that helps weed out all the crappy programers and themers.  There are always ways around things as is apparent with the number of mods available.

Well... there isn't always a way around it, but that doesn't mean that custom ROMs can't be loaded onto the phone.  It just means that it has to be based off of "official, signed" firmware "from the manufacturer".

I saw that news about HTC planing to lockdown their devices.

Being a guy who has resurrected MANY failed Rom Flashed HTC devices I am sure it has to do with the extrodinary amount that are Warranty returned due to bad flashes.

I was pretty big into the Rom scene with my WinMo HTC phones, and it was staggering the ammount of people who would brick their phone because they flashed a Rom for another phone model onto their device.

Those are the actions that cause manufacturers to lockdown bootloaders.  People need to invest time into learning what they are doing, and if they brick a phone, learn how to fix it rather than warranty return it.  I used to make quite a nice dime fixing bricked/broken phones as a hobby.

If I had an Iphone, I wouldn't have to deal with my phone restarting everyda. . Gina and the VZW Twitter both said THEY were rolling out GB on the 27th. Not Motorola and not to select users..
