Here is some basic info regarding the new upcoming update. If you have any new information PLEASE update this thread and attach some links for all of us to follow.

  • Android 3.0 Gingerbread will be released in mid- October (around 15 -16th), 2010. First handsets shipping in November/December – for the Holiday Season.
  • Minimum hardware requirements for Android 3.0 devices are: 1GHZ CPU, 512MB or RAM, displays from 3.5” and higher.  (We all, of course, heard that Android handsets with 2GHz CPU’s are coming)
  • New 1280×760 resolution available for the devices with displays of 4” and higher. (Anyone thinking about Android tablets now? )
  • Completely revamped user interface. If you want to get a feeling of what Android 3.0 Gingerbread UX is like, check out the Gallery app on Nexus One. The same overall feel, light animated transitions, etc. Natively, through all the UI.
  • Android’s split into 2 branches becomes official. 3.0 for top of the line/high end devices. Cheap, low-end mass market handsets will keep Android 2.1/2.2

Just a few jabs to get the fire started. Keep it nice here please, and lets help each other be the highest informed forum on the net!                                            GO GINGERBREAD!!!!!

it is the next version of the android operating system...but doesn't appear to be coming any time soon. your phone's operating system is updated from time to time with added features...much like windows 95 to 98 to now...vista, then windows 7.

jmancil1972 - Thanks for the response. I have seen that suggestion. I will give it a try. At the same time I wonder why that process is needed to make the battery status show accurately. Can someone provide a technical explanation?

There is a file within the system called baterytstats.bin that relays your battery status to the OS, and in turn, to the user.  This file, being part of the system, gets replaced when the OS is updated.  The file then gets repopulated during use, however, if the phone is first started up on a less than full battery, this may be mistaken as 100%.  The phone uses this value to move to a trickle charge and, if it's less than true 100%, will give the appearance of decreased battery life.  That's why doing the bump charge, as mentioned above, then running all the way down (I let my phone die, the batterystats.bin file will actually cause your phone to shut off before the battery is COMPLETELY drained, preventing damage), then charge your phone all the way back to 100% without break.  If you have the ability to access the system, it is possible to delete this file and recalibrate your battery with one cycle, however, as most do not have this ability, it can take a couple times through before you see improvement in battery life.

It has to do with a file that will rewrite itself on the phone. I've heard of rooted phones needing this done, but it seemed to work on my stock Inc

Well only 8 days remain in the month of September.  Situation looks grave.  Maybe time for me to look for a carrier that can deliver on its promises.  Besides Verizon coverage in the state of Washington is almost the worst in the country.  AT&T at least is working on providing a better network.

verizon never promised anything. htc announced it, and they should've known better.

I still haven't gotten it.  I called Verizon a week ago and they gave me the number for HTC.  Talked to HTC directly and they told me it has nothing to do with location, it was being rolled out by serial numbers thru Googles servers.  I can't see how it could be taking this long.  I just called and talked to Verizon again and they swear it the rollout hasnt been paused.  I'm sure theres a development team from Verizon thats responsible for the handling of this, and if its been paused to fix some bugs or issues why wouldnt they let people know instead of just leaving everyone, including the customer service reps at Verizon and HTC in the dark?  Ridiculous.

demmo86rt & AZSALUKI - Thanks for your advice on battery management. I am now back to "normal" battery life (which has always been one of the few weak points of the Incredible - otherwise a great phone!).

Glad it worked for you, this is information that should really be included in the upgrade process.  I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard to not allow the install process until your battery is at 100%.

I'm still waiting for notification that the update is available, too.

This is still being pushed out, right? VZW or HTC haven't pulled it back due to another issue have they?

Just hopped over to the HTC forum for the DROID Incredible and found this post:

I have been working with a tech at HTC and they told me the update has not been released to everyone as of yet and that it is still coming in batches.  He said to give it 2 more weeks until it is showing fully released and then we can see why the update is not coming through.  Verizon shows my phone as having it but I am still on FROYO.  Do not waste your time doing a factory reset because a different tech walked me through that and it still did not work.  This is so frustrating!!!!

I've been trying for days to get a response on their Twitter stream, the just keep ignoring the question. Even when they acknowledge that I'm not happy and say " how can I assist?" I ask the question about where the update is and if it's pulled, and all there is is silence.

They sure do resond to people looking to switch or get a new phone though - they're just glorified sales people.

I had to trick the Twitter team to answer me by telling them I need a new phone....after forwarding my question about the update that I had been asking about several times a day for the last two weeks they answered with "no new news on the update "

If I don't get Gingerbread soon, I will not renew my contract and possibly cancel it.

I spend $180 for two phones w/ 700 mins, unlimited texting, and Net.

I expect better customer service from VZW and HTC for their prices.

I spend over $2,000 a year for this CRAP!

Verizon should push HTC to give it all of their man power.

I'D RATHER NOT GET UPDATES, THAN JUST BE WAITING FOR ONE FOR A YEAR.

I planned on renewing my contract and getting new phones, but I realize that this sort of thing is not going to go away regardless of the phone. I'd rather pay less, and get the same crappy customer service. Reception for all companies are great in my area. Including the unlimited everything pre-pay for around $50.

If you like your Incredible you don't want this update. I got the OTA update a couple of weeks ago and my phone started behaving strangely. Prior to the update I have the phone for about 18 months with no problems.

I started getting 'low memory' warnings and decided that it might be a good idea to do a factory reset. After the factory reset, I was no longer able to receive text message. I called Verizon support and they were not able to resolve the issue and would not acknowledge that the 2.3.4 update as reported on many forums was breaking a lot of Incredibles. I got a call from Verizon on my case on Tuesday and after they tried to get me to upgrade they agreed to send me a refurbished Incredible 2.

So as I stated earlier, If you like your D Inc. avoid this upgrade.

I would agree what  mindhead1  said your better off without the update for now untill HTC gets things fixed mine is haveing minor issues. like at times it does'nt want to connect to Wi-Fi or it flip 1 X an 3 G. an i did the factory reset so far i'm getting my text an my memory seems fine but don't get to worked up about not getting the update. And as many people that has the incredible there will be a fix for it soon.  :smileyhappy:  B33

The issue is, Verizon is silent. No word if it was stopped to be fixed, if they are fixing it, if it's just stopped, still going on, but taking forever... nothing. And they are not answering any direct questions, either here or on their Twitter feed. I'd be happy with just a " yeah, we stopped the update due to problems that were reported and are fixing them and will re-release it when it's done" Somehting. I don't think we're asking for too much here!
