  • Minimum hardware requirements for Android 3.0 devices are: 1GHZ CPU, 512MB or RAM, displays from 3.5” and higher.  (We all, of course, heard that Android handsets with 2GHz CPU’s are coming)
  • New 1280×760 resolution available for the devices with displays of 4” and higher. (Anyone thinking about Android tablets now? )
  • Completely revamped user interface. If you want to get a feeling of what Android 3.0 Gingerbread UX is like, check out the Gallery app on Nexus One. The same overall feel, light animated transitions, etc. Natively, through all the UI.

it is the next version of the android operating system...but doesn't appear to be coming any time soon. your phone's operating system is updated from time to time with added features...much like windows 95 to 98 to now...vista, then windows 7.

I briefly received a notice the other day that an Android update was available, but I didn't do it as it wasn't a good time for me to wait for an update. I planned on doing the update later that night, but then the update notice was gone and my phone says it's up to date (even though it's still on Android 2.2).

So, I can't seem to get the new Android update now and am not sure when/if I will get to.

Is there a proven way to get the update? Or with the reported issues, is it gone now?

ok, i emailed HTC coustmer support last night about getting the first update the other day then it failing and not receiving notification of updates still avaible.  here are the responces from HTC

go to Settings>About phone>Software Information and check to see if the Software Build number is 4.08. If it is, then you have the correct update. If it is not, please follow the directions below:

Disable background data in accounts & Sync. Go into date and time in settings, then change the month/year, add 3 to each. Then check for updates.
Tap phone then dial the Google check-in service number. On the dialer pad, dial *#*#2432546#*#*, Then check for updates. After the Google service number is entered, it should then immediately disappear and the customer will see a message in the notification bar. It should say checkin succeeded. It may take up to 72 hours.

after i tried all of this i emailed them back and asked what should take 72 hours, the update coming or the notification of sucessful check in.  and i asked if HTC had pulled this update from the system.  here is the responce from that.

you will get the notifiction that checkin was successful, however; this is what may take up to 72 hours. After you receive this, you should receive the update with Software Build Number 4.08. This has not been pulled. Because so many update are going out, the airwaves are busy

after about a half hour i reset the date/time back to auto and turned background data back on and i instantly got the notification that my check in was sucessfull.  still no update but i will give it 72 hours to see if it comes in.

I followed the instructions above, and got the update once again.  However, as before, after choosing to restart and install, the phone hangs with the message Rebooting Now, but it never does reboot.  Tried restarting manually twice, but this did not trigger the update - I'm still on V4.06.605.3

This update seems terminally flawed to me.

@huskerseth, from what you are saying the htc tech said, we should get teh "checkin successful "  however that is not happening, you changed your date back and that is when you got the successful message, however that is not what the tech said, I believe after we enter the *#*#2432546#*#*  we need to wait before we change the date and time and etc back.

Also some of us are waiting on the 4.06, did they say anything about that? I'm still waiting to get that one. :smileysad:( , this method does not get us the 4.06 does it?

What a mess! I have yet to receive even the 4.6 update availability notification. Though, at this poing, I'm GLAD I haven't received any update notices. I'd rather have a back revisioned working phone than what some have reported being left with after the update(s).

Best of luck to those who are having problems!

So, here's a question.   I have 4.06 which crapped up my phone and I'm not being offered 4.08 yet.  Since my bill is ~$177.00/month, is Verizon going to credit me ~$5.75 per day until they get it fixed???  Email isn't working b/c my space is low, I can't get to my pictures, my apps or anything else on my SD card, and whatever else that isn't working besides bluetooth and the text message while I'm on a call thing, which I haven't cared enough about to try and figure out.

@dalite - I like punishment too - think I'll call and ask about the credit to my bill

I did do the temporary fix I read about here: http://androidforums.com/htc-droid-incredible/409767-problem-solution-after-gb-update-missing-apps-a..., but as it suggests, every time I reboot the phone, I have to go through these steps again.  Argh.  And apparently, it's not new!

@huskerseth - thanks for the date tip, I may try that just to see if I get 4.08

Does anyone have an update on when we might see 4.08?  And I wonder, will it even fix these issues?

@incredible4me, I have not seen the update come through yet, I am hoping it is b/c I am at work with spotty coverage.

the HTC Tech did not differentiate between the 4.06 and 4.08 updates.  I am still waiting on both.

So...I followed the instructions from a previous poster about turning off background data, and setting the date/time to something with 3 in it...and poof..I had the update..  The .2 version that is 8.6 MB...

Before when I had the update, it tried to install and cancelled because I "didn't have enough space"...NOW, it downloads but says it is rebooting the phone in ten seconds, but DOESN'T!

I called HTC today, they took a report and someone will be contacting me shortly.  They said this is a new problem they aren't aware of.

Of course, they told me to do a factory reset...but, truly..I didn't!  lol

@huskerseth, Could you please let me know, I just got off the phone with htc and they are not helpful at all, they told me to contact vz, cause its being pushed out by vz.

I'm getting so many different responses I'm about to just take a hammer to the phone, I'm about tired of this nonsense, vz tells me to go to htc and htc tells me to go to vz.

I think this will be my last htc phone and I'm about done with vz's sorry arse, look at this forum, there is not one response from vz themselves.

meanwhile I updated teh GF's phone on the 14th to 4.06 and last night to 4.08 with no problems, yet I'm not getting crap.

Well, you could call HTC back and tell them that I just had an 'escalation report" taken...and they are supposed to call me back...

They took all my info, and ESN # of my phone.  The lady on the phone didn't have any technical experience tho...but, said it isn't on their known issues list for this update.

Verizon won't talk to me, they transfer to HTC immediately.

@peakcomp, call htc back and you will get a different response each time, I called twice today so far, first person told me they know about it and that the the update will be released in the next 72 hours, I asked her if they pulled it after the first release she said no, she said 4.08 will be released within the next 72 hours, I told her I don't have that one I'm looking for 4.06 first, she said it does not matter, the new 4.08 has the 4.06 in it.  At this point I realized I'm talking to somebody who has no idea what she is talking about, I kindly thanked her for her time and hung up, didn't want to rude tho I really wanted to tell her what I think about htc and vz at this point.

so hung up with her and called back, got a different lady, she told me opposite of what the first person told me, she said htc is not releasing anything its vz that is doing it and I should talk to them, she said she has no info on any updates period and that I have to talk to vz, she said it has nothing to do with htc.

my next phone purchase and carrier is not gonna have anything to do with htc and vz, this is how they want to treat us that is fine, we will take our business some place else.

Don't even get me started with the vz, tech, 4 hours and all he did was surf the net and tell me things I already saw on the htc and  centeral forums, heck I had to tell him about the *#*#checkin#*#* thing, in short the vz tech knew less then I did and was zero help, after 4 hours of checking teh net and telling me stuff I know I was told to contact htc.

@B33, I read your post, I'm not getting any updates period. I'm still waiting on 4.06 **bleep** it.

If you expect me to do a factory reset you can forget it, I can't lose all my stuff, nor did I have to do that for my  GF's phone to update, plus I keep my phone clean and tidy, fr has nothing to offer me as far as maintanace and my phone running better.

@incredible4me:

You won't get 4.06 as it has been pulled for Good a will not be re re-lessed only 4.08 is out. An i'm Not! forcing any one or putting there arms behind there backs with handcuffs makeing them do this. I'm just saying it helped me an i've done it on all of the OS builds that have came out. An i've had my phones for over a year Now. An i have not lost anything important except for a few out of date apps that are No longer in the Market an are not Supported or could be updated.

@B33, How can you say with such certainty that the 4.06 update has been pulled. Is there any information that indicates this? I'm asking because there are people who are still on Froyo, and 4.08 was just an incremental update. What happens to those who never go the 4.06 update?

Ok. I have some more information. I was looking at the HTC support site for DROID Incredible, and now their site lists software update 4.08 as being a common update for both people on 3.26 (FROYO) or 4.06 (Gingerbread Initial). Based on your sofware version, it will download either 87 mb or 8mb worth of update and install it.

So I guess at this point, we all need to patiently wait to get the "new" 4.08 update.

@B33 this also answers my question that I asked you about 4.06.

See this link: http://www.htc.com/us/support/droid-incredible-verizon/downloads/

Thanks and hope this helps others!

I got mine to work with all of your help, thanks.  I'll spare you the gory details of my entire day spent on this (and many failed attempts at installing 4.08 due to space problems) but a few tips that were important to my case:

Someone said you need something like 6.25 GB of free space - ended up I did need that

Getting the 4.08 update to download an install.

1. moved all my music/pictures/files from internal storage to my PC. (3.26GB)

2. deleted all my downloaded apps, even though they had been moved to the SD (52 of them)

3. ensured I had more than 6.25GB of free space in internal memory.

4. wiped the cache partition (http://forums.androidcentral.com/verizon-droid-incredible/134246-second-gb-update-patch-wont-reboot-...) - not sure if I really needed this part in the end, but it didn't hurt.

5. changed the date as described by huskerseth in this thread on 11-17-2011 10:22 AM and fetched the new patch following the directions exactly as they were included there.

6. installed it when prompted (within a minute or two) and it rebooted properly.

7. moved my files/pictures/music back from my PC to internal storage, changed the date/time back to automatic

8. erased my SD card using the SD& Phone Storage -> utiilites option on the phone.

now I'll go download the handful of those 52 apps that I actually used!

And as frustrating as this is, I'm sure those of you who spoke with HTC or Verizon had a much more difficult experience, so thanks for sharing all that you learned from them.

@gethrwoe, I have 6.52GB of free space, cleared my cache, change the date and etc and nohting.

Glad to see at least it worked for you but many of us are waiting for 4.06 and not getting it no matter what we do.

@nimiaj, I looked at that also but was listed pretty much on the 15th, its been 2 days already. Why can't htc or vz just give us a straight answer.

I did miss the part first time I looked about the users on 3.26 and users on 4.06, so maybe soon they will send it to all of us.

@incredible4me, I wish I had an answer to your question! Smiley Happy For whatever reason, all of these guys seem to stay very secretive about these updates and when they will roll out etc etc. My next phone is Galaxy Nexus. Atleast I know that I get an update as soon as google has it ready. No proprietary customizations to deal with.

@incredible4me, did you have any luck trying to install 4.06 from your SD?  I'm curious how you were going to do that since I thought I read that you were still waiting for it.  Anyway, in re-reading your posts, I don't see where you mentioned that you did the  *#*#2432546#*#* check-in service after you changed the date.  That's what made 4.08 download for me (not the check for updates) and it took a while, so I'm guessing it was the complete 4.06+4.08 or the 4.08 is inclusive of 4.06.  And I only got the "check-in successful" message when I was all finished and I changed the date back - go figure.

If I'm not reading you correctly, I apologize and will mind my own business.  And I know you don't have 4.06 and I did.  Have you been able to get anything to download?

@gethrwoe, I'm stil on 3.26 waiting for 4.06 or 4.08 or any update.

I'm holding off on manual install from sd card for now, maybe tomorrow, just want to make sure I have tried everything else.

thank you for taking the time to read my post.

ok so this is what I have done:

Disable background data in accounts & Sync. Go into date and time in settings, then change the month/year, add 3 to each. Then check for updates.
Tap phone then dial the Google check-in service number. On the dialer pad, dial *#*#2432546#*#*, Then check for updates

what happens from that point is that untill I enable background data/auto sync nothing happens, I don't get the check in successful nor are there any updates.

if there are particular steps or settings you think I should try I'm all ears and very appreciative.
