Here is some basic info regarding the new upcoming update. If you have any new information PLEASE update this thread and attach some links for all of us to follow.
- Android 3.0 Gingerbread will be released in mid- October (around 15 -16th), 2010. First handsets shipping in November/December – for the Holiday Season.
- Minimum hardware requirements for Android 3.0 devices are: 1GHZ CPU, 512MB or RAM, displays from 3.5” and higher. (We all, of course, heard that Android handsets with 2GHz CPU’s are coming)
- New 1280×760 resolution available for the devices with displays of 4” and higher. (Anyone thinking about Android tablets now? )
- Completely revamped user interface. If you want to get a feeling of what Android 3.0 Gingerbread UX is like, check out the Gallery app on Nexus One. The same overall feel, light animated transitions, etc. Natively, through all the UI.
- Android’s split into 2 branches becomes official. 3.0 for top of the line/high end devices. Cheap, low-end mass market handsets will keep Android 2.1/2.2
Just a few jabs to get the fire started. Keep it nice here please, and lets help each other be the highest informed forum on the net! GO GINGERBREAD!!!!!

it is the next version of the android operating system...but doesn't appear to be coming any time soon. your phone's operating system is updated from time to time with added features...much like windows 95 to 98 to now...vista, then windows 7.

I finally got it to update but had to a couple of things first that were important. I deleted all my message and drafts, then cleared call history and cleared cache from facebook and gmail. I then followed the instructions below from another reader on another forum and added a couple of points. So if this has been duplicated, I apologize. Try it and if it don't work, clean more application. I did not need to remove my SD card!.
C&P
This is what I got to work to get the 4.08.605.2 update installed successfully on two different Incredibles, both stock/non-rooted, one with a lot of extra apps, and one with only two extra apps. It looks like a lot of work, but is actually very easy to complete, and NO factory reset is required:
- Move as many apps as you can to the SD card (for those having issues accessing them on the SD card, the upgrade to 4.08.605.2 cured this for me).
- Clear out as much text messaging space as you can, especially images. Alternately, you can delete them all. Messages eat a lot of processing memory on these phones.
- Hit the Clear Data (and/or Clear Cache) button on large use applications (email, Gmail, facebook, etc.) After doing this, do not access those apps until after installing the update. For some, you will have to sign in again, but no data was lost since they're synced items. (To do this step, go to Settings > Applications > Manage Applications, select the All tab at the top, and go into each app you want to manage.)
- Press & hold the Power Button and choose Restart.
- As soon as the screen goes blank, press and hold the Power Button and the Volume Down button at the same time.
- A white menu screen will appear, it will take a second and it will perform a small self-check. Then using your Volume Down button, scroll down one spot to Recovery and press the Power button to select it. The phone will immediately show the HTC Incredible screen.
- Then a black screen will appear showing the phone and a red triangle with exclamation point, at this point press and hold the Volume Up button and then press the Power button. Using your Volume Down button again, scroll down to Wipe Cache Partition and press the Power button to select it. This will not delete anything on the phone, just clear a stagnant memory cache.
- After this is complete, select Reboot System Now. Let the phone restart completely.
- Go to Settings > About Phone > System Updates and see if the update shows. If it does, simply select Download or Reboot & Install. If it fails again due to "not enough memory", you need to clear more apps and data and repeat the above steps until it works.
- If the update does not show, back out to Settings, account & sync, then uncheck backround data. The go back to settings and choose Date & Time, uncheck the Automatic box, and set the date 1 year ago from today (11-xx-2010), and hit Ok. (going forward a couple of years also works!)
- Return to About Phone > System Updates, it may still show "Your system is currently up to date." Back out and then go right back in to System Updates. It should be downloading the 4.08.605.2 patch update file. Reboot and Install when it prompts you. If it fails again due to "not enough memory", you need to clear more apps and data until it works.
Give it time to install, on one of my phones it took only a few minutes and on the other it took closer to 10 minutes. On one phone the Droid eye appeared for only a minute and then the phone started up completely and on the other it appeared for closer to five minutes. After the install, remember to return your Date & Time to automatic and recheck your background data in account and synck.
For any apps that aren't accessible and show up with the Droid icon, you should be able to select and remove the icon and simply add it back from your App menu. Alternately, you can re-download it from your Market.

Someone direct me:
I received 4.6 the other day. Installed it and a day or so later received 4.8. It failed to install and the low memory message appeared.
I ended up doing a reset after Gmail failed to function.
The phone reset to factory settings however the software was 4.6 instead of Froyo.
I have notification that 4.8 is available again, but I'm afraid to accept it. I have moved all photos to my sdcard and have reinstalled many of the apps I had lost.
I have over 500MB of phone memory which is more than before when I got 4.8 the first time.
Should I go ahead and accept it since I already have 4.6 and it is working well?

ShoalsRebel: How many apps do you have on your Incredible if you have Quite a few you can Remove all of them that you installed an that should give you back some space to install this Update. If you would rather do this as to a Fr this should help to install it then you can reload your Apps. Your payed will remain but the one's you Unistall you'll have to write them down an then reinstall em from the Market. B33

Okay, I have fended several issues just getting Gingerbread Baked! The first update was deployed 11/15/11 with no issues. This was build 4.06 On 11/16/11 the second update (4.08) attempted install and failed with the dreaded "Low Space" error. I spent time on the phone with both Verizon and HTC. I also emailed both. Neither provided a solution that really worked. Thanks to androidcentral.com and some thought process, I will post what worked for me. I cannot promise this will work for everyone, and as ever, as a disclaimer, I do not take responsibility for your device. It seemed to be a pretty simple fix for me.
Remove any unused apps you can. These can be reinstalled later!
Boot into recovery
- Press and hold Power, Choose "Restart" option
- When screen turns off, press and hold Volume Down and Power
When the white HBOOT screen appears, use the volume button to move down to “RECOVERY.”
Press the Power button to select “RECOVERY.”
When the triangle and exclamation appears, hold the Volume Up and Power button at the same time.
Using the volume button, scroll down to “Wipe cache partition” and select it.
Select "Reboot system now"
When the system restarts, go to Settings>About Phone>System Updates. Chances are the update is NOT there.
Go to Settings>Set Time & Date. UNCHECK "Use Network Time"
Reset your clock for 1 MONTH ahead (not years as suggested by HTC
Go back to Settings>About Phone>System Updates
You should get the update now and it should install and reboot flawlessly.
Note: I didn't lose any data, but a few apps did need to be reinstalled if they were on the SD card. Not a big deal and nothing like the "Hard Reset" suggested to me by Verizon.
Hope this helps others!

Read my Post Here's the Link:
You can also call HTC an ask them what needs to be Done to get a successful update install since your getting a low Memory Warning but i bet they will suggest a Factory Reset or Unistalling some of your Apps an doing at least a Soft Reset witch is pulling the battery while the phone is on an then while it's out holding the power button for 20 sec. an then restalling repowering an then a retry of the update.
Here's HTC's Customer Service page that has there Number to get ahold of them if you wish Too.
Good luck hope you get it Installed... B33

Well, I bit the bullet this morning. I uninstalled a bunch of apps to make sure I had room for the update (4.8) and accepted the install. It went flawlessly. Right now I'm reinstalling my apps.
I'm cautiously optimistic about this, so the jury is still out as to whether it is a good decision.
I plan to get a larger SD card. Mine is ony 2G so I'll need more room since I moved so much to it to make room.

@incredible4me,
You're right (I just realized), it was when I re-checked the "background data" that I got the check-in successful message - not when i changed the date back, but I don't think that really matters here. Looks to me like you've done everything I tried. I wish I had more for you. That's why I asked @abidzip what version they began with - to see if they are in the same boat as you and got it to work of if they already had 4.06 like I did.
The only thing I did that you're not mentioning is each time I tried anew, I went and moved the date another year in the future. It didn't seem to matter if I had the "3"s or not, as long as it was later than the last time I did it. And I hear you, you can't even get the download, you're not even at the low space issue yet so I don't think messing with cache and removing apps is going to help you at this point. I'd go for the SD - I think that's a good try. But wait, I was going to say, what have you got to lose, but then again, you may just be better off to stay where you are until the rest of the world figures this one out in a week or so. You're not having any problems, are you?
@ShoalsRebel - what have you got to lose? You already went through the painful reset... Have a sense of adventure!

@abidzip, I have tried all of that and still no go.
@gethrwoe, I have tried future dates and past dates, with 3s and without.
I think you are right, I think manual install is the way to go.

4.08 I think was froyo. 4.06.605.3 is the Gingerbread software with problems. And finally 4.06.605.2 is the fix for all the gingerbread problems. .2 is a 8.6 mb file to fix the issues with the .3 release.
If can't be pulled because I am continually downloading it today from their servers. It just won't install...but does download to my phone.
There was a problem with the .2 before where it errored due to needing more space when there was lots of space. Nowwww it just isn't installing.
I know I am waiting to hear from HTC myself.
In the meantime I am continually downloading and attempting to install his .2 release. With no luck

@peakcomp, 4.06 was the first update on the 14th, then 4.08 came out to update 4.06.
I think you got the numbers backwards, froyo is 3.26 If I'm not mistaken, my GF got 4.06 on the 14th and I updated her phone to it, but I didn't get it. then on the 16th she got 4.08 and we updated her to that last night.
I think to fix that, so I think you meant to say 4.08 and said 4.06.
so which build do you have now? 3.26 or 4.06 or 4.08?
I'm stuck on 3.26 right now waiting on 4.06 or whatever that can update it.

@peakcomp, here is what you need to know about the version and what has happened so far...
Incredible Froyo is version 3.26.x.x
Incredible Gingerbread first release is version 4.06. 87 mb
Incredible Gingerbread second patch release is version 4.08. 8mb
Gingerbread first release was done couple fo months back. There was a problem with it and due to issues, update was pulled. Few days ago the same release was pushed out again. This time around a lot of people got the notificaiton but when they clicked on Install Now, nothing happened.
During the same time patch release 4.08 (for the 4.06) was also pushed out and that has apparently had its own issues too.
So now you have some people who are anticipating their first 4.06 gingerbread update, and there are people we are eagerly waiting for their second 4.08 gingerbread patch update.
There you have it.

@Peakcomp
The latest Gingerbread update build for the D.inc out right now it is 4.08 not 4.06 ))) 4.06 was realeased in September on the 9th day then shortly after was Pulled By HTC. Because of errors in it.
I will repeat my self one MORE TIME ( 4.06 ) has been pulled an will not be Re-leased Again! As i have comfirmed this with a HTC Technician.
