Gingerbread update

More than a little disappointed to say that I have yet to receive the update. It has been release for more than a month and all Samsung is able to tell me is that they are doing it batch by batch. I had sent them an email just asking when I could expect it, they didn't even answer the question and are referring me back to Verizon. Samsung's customer service is such a joke, they way the word things is offensive (I know there are some technological ignorant people out there but come on, I know how to update my phone) this was their response which I still don't understand if he was trying to tell me that updates will be scheduled or updates are scheduled week by week

Dear Brittany,

Thank you for your correspondence. We are glad to assist you on your inquiry. You can upgrade your Samsung Droid Charge Smartphone (SCH-I510) to the Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) version by recieving updates Over The Air (OTA updates).

Updates we be scheduled this week in batch by batch to regulate the network traffic.
EP4 update is which is the 2.3.6 Gingerbread for the phone.

Should you have additional questions concerning a specific feature of your device, for 24 hour information and assistance, we recommend viewing the FAQs, Videos, How To Guides and other support materials on our Samsung Support website ( http://www.samsung.com/us/support/ ).

Thank you for your continued interest in Samsung products.

Sincerely,

my Motorola Doird2 received the update back in September and I know what company I will be switching back to with my June upgrade.

My next email to them

This is the reply I got, to my asking WHEN I would get the update. I have been checking for it everyday for the last two weeks. I know they are being sent out in batches but it is a little ridiculous when it was released over a month ago. I release how updating the system works as my Droid 2 got the update back in september. Very frustrating that your company gives the run around (as noted with other customers unhappiness) I realize that all updates must be personalized for each individual phone but very frustrating when much older phones have it and you aren''t able to even provide a decent answer.

Brittany,

This is how I updated to GB 2.3.6 and it worked GREAT.  Take a look at the following.  Maybe you could re-install GB 2.3.6???

DESCRIPTION OF A MANUAL UPDATE - GB 2.3.6

This is for the Samsung Charge phone from Verizon.  My battery was charged to 98%.  I did NOT have the phone plugged into the charger.  To do this your Samsung Charge phone you MUST NOT be ROOTED.  When I did it my phone was running STOCK on Froyo 2.2.1  EE4.  BTW, this update does NOT root your phone.

I went to the URL shown below and downloaded the Gingerbread update file named  "update_EE4B_to_EP4D.zip"  to my PC.  The file size of this zip file was 117,613 KB in my PC but after it was copied into the root directory of my Samsung Charge phone the file size was 114.9 MB.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1364298

After you go to this URL you want to choose the FIRST URL at the top of the page named, multiupload.com/HAG3RFTBY6, and download that file to your PC.  It is named  "update_EE4B_to_EP4D.zip"

Next, while it is still in your PC, change the name of the file to:  update.zip  There should not be two zips.  For example make sure it only has one zip.

Then using the USB cable copy the file "update.zip" from your PC to your Charge phone's SD Card root directory.  The root directory on my phone is:  /mnt/sdcard.  Do not copy it into any folder in that directory.

The root directory /mnt/sdcard is where all my Music, Photos, Videos and so forth are stored.  After you copy it there you should go to the APP My Files to confirm that update.zip is there in the root directory on your SD card and there is only ONE .zip.  It's icon will be white showing that it is a file and the other icons in the root directory will be gold colored showing that they are folders.  The file size is now 114.9 MB.

Next I pressed three buttons almost at the same time (this was tricky and a bit difficult).  I probably tried 8-10 times before it worked.  What it was doing is turning off the phone but I kept trying.  The three buttons  are:  Volume Up Button, Home Button, and the Power Button.

One user gave me the suggestion to Hold Volume Up + Hold Home and then Hold Power until you see the Samsung logo appear.  Then release the power button and last release the other two buttons (Volume Up + Home).  It's tricky just keep trying.

In my case the screen that came up was a RECOVERY screen (see photo).  It said recovery at the top.  You will see four choices of  things you can do.  On that list of choices I touched "apply update.zip from sdcard" and then I pressed the HOME button at the bottom of the phone.   The update started and the screen that came up had an picture of an open box with an arrow coming the top and going down toward a Droid.  There also was a BAR showing the progress which was slow at times.  See attached photo:  Update Okay.

IF IT DOES NOT WORK AND YOUR PHONE STAYS LOCKED ON TO A DROID LIKE THE ONE SHOWN IN THE PHOTO BELOW IT PROBABLY IS NOT GOING TO WORK BUT GIVE IT A MINUTE OR SO BEFORE QUITING.  See attached photo:  Recovery Screen.

To quit you can touch the first option on the recovery screen to reboot your phone (you may have to also press HOME) to get it back to how it was before you tried this.  Also, holding the power button in usually reboots your phone.

It took all of 15+ minutes and then the phone rebooted itself and finally just turned off.  I waited a couple more minutes after the screen went blank (black) and then pressed the power button. The phone started and GB 2.3.6 was working very well.  After you check that it is working I suggest you reboot the phone one more time and you're done!

ChristinaB_VZW,

In your reply to Brittany your referred to a Direct Message (DM).

How does a person send a DM to someone else?  Is that like a Private Message was in the previous forum format?

Best regards,

JerryF

You can private message from the create option>direct message and type in the person's name or on their profile, in the bottom left hand corner there is the option as well

Brittany,

Thanks for the info on Direct Messages (DM) but it would not let me send a DM to a Verizon employee (ChristinaB_VZW).

Best,

ChristinaB,

At the beginning of this thread I posted my method of updating to GB 2.3.6.

Can you tell me where I can download Verizon's "official" version of GB 2.3.6 that can be used for a MANUAL UPDATE to GB 2.3.6 for the Charge phone???

Thanks and best regards,

JerryF

When I had some problems updating to gb, Samsung told me the only way to download it was OTA.. Then again, we all know how smart they are when it comes to consumer electronics and product support.
