Global Roaiming with Droid X, excessive data usage charges

I am in Japan at the moment using my droid x for incoming and outgoing email... Japan uses CDMA so the phone is working fine, slow but fine.  I have turned off the 'background data' in the "data management' and have set the email to a 15 minute fetch schedule and turne dthe "data push" off.  I am doing all of this in an attempt to keep the data roaming charges to a minimal, I do not get an excessive amount of email and I do not download attachements but for some reason my bill for 6 days here is already at over 500$ with no voice calls, all data charges.  what can I do to make this better???? please help.  I used to have a global Backberry and it was great, when I was in Iceland a few months ago I used the blacknerry constantly for email and my data fees for the enitre month trip was less 100$.  Any ideas on what I can do to limit data anymore?

The factor that you are not focusing on is Global, the Droid X isnt a world phone that has global roaming caplabilities so any time you use your data in any manner it will cost you a high rate for data use...  It sounds like you should have went with another Global phone like Droid 2 Global because I do not see a solution other that disable data all together and use wifi connections.  This is the reaseon you recieve the notice when you activate data roaming....

The problem you are running into is you are Roaming on Japan towers, Non-VZW.  So those charges are directly from the Japan mobile companies via VZW.  As wildman stated, I'd just shutoff all data services.
