Gmail chat notifications?

Can these be turned off on my DX?  I use the chat feature on my PC at work and don't want a notification on my phone everytime I get a response.  Besides, half the time the notification is a good hour behind real time.  I've been looking on my phone and online at Gmail, but not finding where it's even possible to stop the notifications to my DX.  Anyone have a solution for this?

To turn off your Google Talk notifications, see the instructions below:

1. From the home screen, touch the applications tab (located at the bottom of the display).
2. Touch Talk.
3. Press the Menu button.
4. Touch More.
5. Touch Settings.
6. Touch IM notifications
7. Ensure that the check mark is not selected
