Looked at Motorola's site and I find nothing about how to see if it's available for the handset.
Not sure that the *228 really does.

Hey guys, go into Settings and Date & Time and change the date to Dec 21, 2012 and you'll be able to update to Cotton Candy (Android 5.0). Be aware that the world may end immediately after though.

If you press option 1, that only re-programs your phone or you can activate another verizon phone using that option 1. Either way you are wrong

Well, all I can say is if it worked for him, it might not work for everyone else. He might have accidentally found a backdoor of some sort and Verizon/Motorola found out. Who knows...
