I went through this with the Motorola Droid: it cannot be use with ANY Bluetooth Headset for voice activated dialing through activation by the button on the headset. It will work with some in car bluetooth systems. Returned that phone after a day, since I drive a stick shift, and the Droid was guaranteed to cause an accident.
The HTC Incredible DOES NOT work with any bluetooth HEADSET either for voice activation. The Incredible has voice dialing, but this has to be done through the screen
At my last count, 17 states and Canada ban the use of any handheld electronic device while driving.
I am due for an new phone and have been due for six months.
My old phone is a Samsung 780 which has excellent call quality and long battery life. It is a Windows smartphone.
While there are a lot of things that I like about the Droid operating system, it is not worth risking an accident or a ticket.
I have not been able to find any apps that overcome this. If I could, I would pick up the phone tomorrow.
Don't really want to start a war on this. If you are happy with your Droid phones and can live without this feature, stay with it. I would like to have a Droid phone, but cannot live without this feature.
Is there a logical explantion why such a feature would be omitted? Can we ever expect a workaround?

My dad feels the same way. There is voice dialer HF. My understanding is it works wonderfully with the DROID. You set it to start a dialogue when you push the camera button. Yeah you have to touch the phone but to be able to touch an external button and then go into a dialogue that will end with a call is a minor trade and fulfills the handsfree specifications.

Hi, New to forum and just replaced two phones - mine with Motorola Droid which I should receive today. Went through long process to decide on Droid then to discover no voice dial which is major requirement for me.
In researching Verizon website, found I could press dialer and use speaker for voice and decided I might compromise but later, in talking with Customer Assistance rep, was told that voice dialing on Motorola Droid depended on blue tooth device you used.. He said my current blue tooth should work; however, if it did not, I should go into the local Verizon store and try devices with phone to insure I found one that worked and then come home and purchase one on- line.
From reading this, it seems NO blue tooth works??? Please, any experts please respond. If I have not searched the forum enough, please forgive my ignorance as a new member. Thanks much!

this is from cnet (imo....one of, or the best source for tech stuff)

"droid doesn't" when it comes to a complete hands free experience. to me, it doesn't look like that big of a deal....but you WILL have to touch the phone twice to voice dial on your bluetooth (once to activate and a second time to confirm). the review also said it is very accurate, even at 3 feet away from the phone (although i'm not quite sure how the phone is 3 feet away if you gotta touch it to activate...lol??). version 2.2 is coming and i would think this is something they could address?????

Thankfully Android 2.2 will have Bluetooth Voice dialing capabilities. Unfortunately no official timetables have been released and it took almost 2 months to get 2.1. It appears this will be a little faster but it's hard to say.
The problem with bluetooth dialing was a software issue. The capability has always been there but it was set to False. The issue was that Google Voice recognition didn't work with the low sample rate of Bluetooth headsets. They didn't have an adequate vocal prompt menu to compensate and I suppose the decision was that it was too frustrating and they would have to work on it. It is active in 2.2 but until I see it and get the chance to try it out I won't comment on how it will be implemented or how well it will work but at least it is there.
My solution has been to get a blackberry oem corded headset which has outstanding call and music capabilities but you still have to touch the screen to confirm if it didn't recognize properly. My main solution was to set a screen with contact icons for the people I call the most. I could just touch the icon. You can do it several different ways. One is to set it up for the whole contact just to make it faster to get to the person you want to call. I did that cause I could go through that menu pretty quickly. Or set it up with just the phone number and it would go directly to asking me if I wanted to use Google Voice or not.

2.2 has added hands-freee voice-activated dialing. Just tried it (double click button on headset) and it works better than on any previous phone I've had. Very sensitive and accurate. Now if the Flash support only worked as advertised. . .

I have a Jabra set and it works pretty well. I had to change the name on some contacts so the phone could more easily understand my voice. Since then, I have had next to no problems. As for Flash, I was told last night that the 2.2 flash update is still not the full version. Also, if you are trying to play Hulu, apparently they have set it so that it will not play period. They want you to pay for the enhanced service that is currently available for the iPhone.
