HTC not so incredible reception effect on battery life

Probably my only complaint with this phone is the poor reception I'm getting. It usually fluctuates between 1 and 2 bars. I rarely get 3 and when I do it's for a few seconds. I've never seen all 4 bars on my phone. I've tried to reprogram roaming capabilities by dialing *228 option 2, but that doesn't seem to do anything. I live in a metropolitan area with great 3G coverage. Which leads me to believe it's either a problem with the phone design, either hardware or firmware.
Even thou the signal reception is low, I do not drop any calls and the data connection is really fast, my concern is with battery life. When the phone operates with low signal strength (mine typically goes from -95 dBm to -102 dBm) it needs more power for the antenna to reach the tower, putting more strain on the battery.
I'm on my way to the Verizon store now to compare signal strength with the demo phone on a controlled environment, just to make sure this problem is not isolated to my phone. I'll update later.
Is anyone having the same issues with reception? Or does anyone know if a firmware fix is on the works?

UPDATE:
I just came back from the Verizon store. I placed my Dinc side by side with the demo model (which signal fluctuated from 2-3 bars). Mine was at 2 bars, sometimes 3. I looked at the settings on both phones and the signal strength was about -82 dBm. At one point, mine was -79dBm with two bars, which was more than what the demo had with 3 bars.
Seems like it's a problem with the phone in general. This HOWEVER, do NOT affect voice/data speeds at all! The only concern here is how it increases strain on the battery.
On the way back home, I actually had full 4 bars about a mile away from the store ( -59 dBm) which is pretty good.
Let's hope HTC is away of this and plans to release a firmware fix soon. Also, I'm sure you know this, but I got confirmation from the store OTA w/ 2.2 is coming this August!

I have the same problem. They are sending me a new phone but I think that one will be the same. Probably refuse delivery and wait for the OTA Upgrade.

I am new to the Incredible and wondering just how 'incredible'. I have had the phone less than a week and have encountered the same problem with reception (no bars, no 3G) .. often dropping the few calls I have made. To say this is frustrating is an understatement. I have called Verizon Wireless (in fact dropping that call 3-4 times) and they have opended a "trouble sheet", but not given me any answers or solutions. No reception has also meant no text messages have gone through.
Any advice?

Scroll down on the screen with the PRI. PRL is listed next.
