OK so here's what's going on.
First, my phone had a problem connecting to my SD card (it kept saying it was busy)
so I tried to turn my phone off and restart it (it solves most problems generally right?)
then my phone tried to turn off for 3 hours (it never actually powered down)
I took the battery out of the device (I know it's something to avoid, but it was stuck on that 'shutting off' screen for 3 hours)
I put the battery back in and now the phone doesn't start up, it's stuck on the Motorola 'M' screen.
Can anyone think of why this would happen? Is there anyway I can fix it? Is it something that I'm doing wrong, or does it seem like there might be something wrong with me phone?
Any advice or tips or whatever will be greatly appreciated.

I don't think that this is something that you are doing to cause a problem.
Take out the battery again, but this time also take out the SD card. Put the SD card back in and put the battery back in. I've heard of some problems with the SD card not being put in "just right" and causing things like the behavior that your describing.
If that doesn't work, you next step is probably going to need to be going back to the store to have someone from VZW look at it.

Also try without the SD card at all (or with a different one). I had a broken SD card and it caused the symptons you describe.
