I just thought I would share, as I have had 5 phones all doing the same things and no one being able to help. I got the suggestion from howard forums and it has been a droid saver!
The app from the market called Screen Suite $2.99 actually locks the phone the right way. (this person will make a fortune off of us droid owners)
I have not hung up on anyone since I installed it!
I have nothing to do with the app, but just thought I would share as it was very frustrating for me and I'm glad someone else shared it!
Make sure that the settings are set up to your liking. Two things you need to make sure is that, Overide phone lock and auto lock during call are both check, the rest is up to you.
