Horrible luck or horrible phone?

So I bought the droid x in Oct after being sold on it by the Verizon sales rep (who told me there was no plan on Verizon getting the iPhone in the future :robotmad: ) and have had nothing but horrible experiences with it since. Before I go into this I would like to note the phone is in a case, never been wet, and never been dropped.

First Droid X worked great for about 1 month........ then it started hanging itself up during calls.....  took into the Verizon store they reset it and "fixed it." A week later the phone would be literally sitting on a table and the camera would turn on and start taking pictures as if it was possessed still hanging itself up also randomly. Back to the store......... wiped it to factory AGAIN to "fix it". 3 Hours later it starts again with the camera snapping pictures to the point I cannot even make calls. Back to the store for a 3rd visit. They decide it is the phone and ship me a new one. Great problem solved!

New Droid X comes in the mail. Been about 2 maybe 3 weeks since I got it now we're back to problems. Now the phone totally locks up all the time. I can be pulling up google to search and it locks, I can be typing a text message it locks, I can be dialing a number it locks, I can be pulling up google maps and hey guess what it locks. In actuality I can do anything and it locks. Now when it locks I don't mash on buttons and expect it to do anything as I realize it is a mini computer and that is only going to make it worse. I have tried using the power button to turn it off after being locked for 5 minutes and it does nothing. I've tried the home button and same result. I have reset the phone to factory settings and still getting locked up. It locks up so badly I am reduced to having to pull it out of the case, remove the back, and pulling the battery.

So am I just having really bad luck on these phones or is this phone just not all it is supposed to be?

So, I feel your frustration.

When I first went to Verizon (from MetroPCS), I got the Motorola Devour. Ended up having to have that phone replaced multiple times because it would freeze, start turning on and off whenever it wanted to, then finally nothing worked on one of them and they gave me a "deal" on a Droid X. So, I get my new Droid X in the mail, it works perfect for three almost four months, and last weekend the Camera shutter won't open. I can't use the camera for anything, after it worked perfectly fine the day before when I took 50+ pictures.

I call into customer service, they connect me to tech support, they send me a "like new replacement" which I got the next day, but come to find that the red side button for the camera, wasn't there. -_- Seriously? So I call again, they send another replacement, I sent back the missing button phone, new one came the next day. I'm getting everything set up on this second "like new replacement" and notice that within a a few hours that this phone is quite slow, kind of glitchy opening programs, doesn't like to stay connected to the internet and this morning decides it wants to shut off and turn back on whenever it pleases.

I call again to tech support, they walk me through a factory reset. The phone goes to the google log-in instead of the activation screen. As the tech dude is telling me that it should show "An Important Call" screen, the phone shuts back off/on by itself, and now shows the "activate your phone" screen. I do so, but he said he is having a replacement phone sent to me anyways, but if the problem was resolved, I just need to send the replacement back. Within five minutes of ending the tech support call, trying to get my settings back to where I like them, the phone shuts on/off again while I'm in the middle of something.

So now, I'm back into my original Droid X with the defective camera shutter, so I can't take pictures. Yay. Talk about horrible luck, yeah?

Have you thought about something that seems a little clear...  The device works fine after hard reset :smileyhappy:...  Have you gave consideration that a app may be cause your issues?

Its not an app thing because even after a complete fresh start it will still do the same thing. I thought about that as well so I left it alone to see if it still did it.

Well I am thinking you are one of the users that has "horrible luck" because I havent any major issues with my device, mostly all that I experianced was usually software or my mistake of overlooking something..  I use my device to its maximum extent without any issues so I hate to hear you are have all these bugs.....  Guess I am a lucky one,

By chance when you reset device are you disabling the auto restore option in the device to make sure the app doesnt place settings or apps back in that may be causeing issue because this has been a issues since 2.2 update?

Both of you......have you tried running in Safe Mode? Even if you are sure apps aren't the problem, this is worth a try.

Short of that, I think Verizon having records of your experiences, would allow you to switch to a comparable model phone.

I am one of the best persons to say that it is DEFINITELY possible that there is a common issue or situation going on that is causing your problems.

To those who have gone through 2, 3, or 4 phones (3 in my situation) it may SEEM that it's not "something you are doing". And, the implication ISN'T that you ARE, or that you are doing something intentionally.

But, it is something that is common among all the phones.

In my situation, which I have yet to see repeated in any forum, the cause of three different X's constantly rebooting was my home router.

I used a router at work and wherever available and never had any issues, but for some reason, never noticed that it only rebooted at home (call it tunnel vision).

On a fluke, I used my 2nd replacement phone without wifi at home and finally determined that was the issue.

Even then, Verizon and Moto CSRs refused to believe that a router could do that, but in the same breath the Moto CSR told me to buy a different router. Lesson being, you never know.

For others with multiple phone issues:

Apps? Yes, that's possible. Were you diligent about installing fresh apps from the market on each replacement phone? Not apps saved on the SD, which is transferred from one phone to the next.

If you say they didn't install any apps, did you HONESTLY not install ANY apps, launchers, etc. and did you format the SD card before activating the replacement phones?

The SD card itself. There have been issues with SD cards. Why Verizon doesn't use a new SD card as a method of troubleshooting, instead of having the user transfer the same card from one phone to another, is beyond me. (I asked and was told I would have to buy a new one because they wouldn't).

The battery. Also transfered from old phone to replacement phone. Before anyone asks, "what could go wrong with a battery?", explain to me how it made sense that my router could make my phone reboot? Electronic devices are unpredictable.

I would even go so far as to suggest you create a new Google account, so contacts aren't automatically reloaded into the replacement phone (the same for email folders). Yes, that's really paranoid, but it was on my list of ideas before I figured out my problem.

Speaking from experiencing it first-hand, when issues continue to cross over from one phone to the next, everything is pointing to something else, besides the phones.

Experiencing it and hearing me say this will make you FURIOUS. I was. But, calm down and think. There is an answer and it isn't "bad luck".

The reboots have been entire fresh reboots 100% with no apps what so ever. Not to mention that with apps when the problem started and no apps directly after a reboot the problem persists. As far as safe mode I wouldn't have the slightest idea how to even do that.

Also I could see if it was user error or something along those lines if any of the same issues were repeating on the phones, but since it is different totally random issues with the phones. One is a camera issue, another a powering off issue and the final a freezing issue I again don't see how even if I had something repeated on any of the phones it would cause 3 totally separate reactions.

As far as the battery and sd card go no I did not try a new card or a new battery. I kind of am in fear of dumping any more money into something I may have to all in all replace very soon.

I do not have wireless, bluetooth, or satellite turned on to minimize battery drainage and I do not have wireless in my home or at work so I don't see how that could effect anything.

I appreciate your thoughts and I could see how in situations they could effect things but not in this one.

This is so true, there is so many veriables to take into consideration to resolve issues like this and if the user are not prepared to give time to trouble shoot issue the issue will always continue, I have learned that the chances of having many devices all giving the user issues there has to be a common factor and if device has been replaced several times this removes the device for the equation.

More things to consider;

Are you using a protective skin over your phone? if so, is it Moto approved? If not, it may fit too tight and could be pressing on the camera button, turning on the camera.

As for phone calls: Are you, by chance, rotating the phone and causing the proximity switch to bring up the dialer screen? When that happens, you can hang up the call with your face, if you aren't careful. (The same is true with iphones).

See if the freezing up stops when it's running in Safe Mode.

Have to ask. What version software is installed on your phone? Left hard button/Settings/About Phone/System Version.

I understand not wanting to put more money into something that you are currently frustrated with. Do you have a friend or family member that has the same phone as you? Maybe you could swap batteries with them and see if reboots are duplicated that way. A micro sd card is pretty cheap these days. You don't have to get the largest size either. An 8 or a 4 gb card should do it for the test purposes.

I was thankful that I had an extra card around the house when my original sd card in my phone developed an error and was unreadable. I was able to transfer the information via a computer to the new card. Then I formatted the original card and now it is considered the spare should the current card fail.

I'm most definitely NOT a VZW employee. If a post answered your question, please mark it as the answer.
