Droid X
Mobile hotspot drops out after two or three minutes. Droid plugged into wall charger, so power should not be an issue. Two or more bars signal strength. HP laptop running Win XP and Firefox. Also HP laptop running Win 7 and either Firefox or Internet Explorer. Running encrypted. Problems in Woodridge IL, Dayton OH, Washington DC, and Hyde Park NY. I keep the Droid about two feet from the laptop. I have not found a location that gives me reliable service.
Verizon has already replaced one Droid because of software problems. I had the same issue with the original unit.
What gives??????????????

Did you go into Settings / Wireless Connections / Wifi Settings / Menu / Advance / Wi-fi Sleep Policies and set it to Never? If you didnt the issue is that the Wifi will time off after a number of minutes to save power.

It was set at "When screen turns off", but the screen always stayed on.
I'll try "Never when plugged in", since I always plug it in when running wi-fi.
I'll keep you posted.

Session with "Never when plugged in" lasted about 10 minutes before dropping out.
Switched to "Never" on the wi-fi settings.
First session dropped connection in about 2 minutes. Restarted. Second session dropped out after about three minutes.
The phone signal strength (on the Droid) shows two bars. I am currently in the Washington DC area.
The wi-fi signal strength on the laptop shows 4 bars.
Should I restart the Droid after changing these settings, or do they take effect immediately? I know Windoze often needs to be resarted when changing certain settings.

I restarted the Droid, even pulling the battery.
Wi-fi session lasted about 7 minutes before dropping out.
It's unpredictable, but I can't use it this way.

This might seem to be a stupid question, but did you add the hotspot to your data plan?

You need to select Never option, this is the only one that seems to help... Also you may want to check your power manager under Menu > Settings > Battery Manager and make sure it on Proformance and see if this helps...

Without a plan the Mobile Hotspot app wont allow user online at all so I am guessing they have the plan...

When you use Mobile Hotspots the data connection is transmitted out the wifi and if its not set to never everytime the device sleeps or inactivity the wifi will disconnect. It makes no since if you are reading a article online and go to turn the page you have to wake phone and wait for connection to be connected to tethered device.

Hi nissmo66,
Thanks to the community for the responses!
Please check and make sure you have set "Inactivity timeout" to "Never Turn-off" under Settings-> Tethering&mobile hotspot->Mobile Wi-Fi hotspot settings.
Please let us know if you are still having issues. Thank you!
