How Secure is a locked phone

I would think this question should be in a FAQ....

If I have a lock code/password set. How secure is my data if I lose the phone? How possible is if for someone to get to my data? What can I do to maximize the security of my data? I have some data in an encrypted DB. Other, like Contacts aren't encrypted.

Thanks,

John

Mostly all personal information is stored in the root directory which is more secure than the data that is stored on SD Card (This is what makes rooting so dangerous because this makes this information accessible easier) but like crb79 reported with the right knowledge and thing can be circumvented even when the data is encrypted.  Basically the security is limited to the programmers knowledge and any thing made by man can be circumvented by man....  But basically at this point I agree that a app such as Lookout with wipe data option is useeful under situation as you described.

I would think that if somebody removed the SD Card and puts it in a SD Card Reader that all unencrypted data would be available to them. The data on the IN STORAGE memory would be harder to get to if they can't guess your Security PIN.

A locked phone is no more secure than a locked door.  Given someone with the knowledge and equipment to do so your lock can be circumvented.  Lockout Mobile Security offers a data/SD card wipe option which can be activated via their website and your phone can be wiped remotely as long as it has a signal.

i'm comfortable with it as i am with wep encryption on my home pc's.  oh yeah i know wep is the least secure.

bottom line, if ali-bubba finds my phone or can gt into my pc, i'll be surprised.

with the 10 numbers, just how many 4 digit combo's are possible, i'm sure someone can answer.

10 to the 4th power = 10,000 possible combinations to include 0000 as a possible code.  In otherwords, if someone wants the data from your phone, they are going to get it in just a couple of minutes if they have your phone.  I know of one way to bypass most locks that can be done in less than 5 minutes and requires nothing special in terms of equipment.

I have a program on my phone that can crack WEP in a minute or two.  The only way to really protect your WIFI connection is with directional antennas.  Otherwise a laptop can crack even the strongest encryption in a matter of minutes.

wificrack, I use it to test my own wifi security.  There are a couple others as well.
